gee thanks for all the replys about my heat problem. I have not been getting over 950 deg for the egts. the max the temp got was 220 when my friend was driving. I also turned up the boost. I would never have let it get that hot before slowing down or pulling over to let it cool down. I was running an electric fan the black magic from flex a lite which i have discovered is crap. worked fine in san diego where it is not hot. I ended up detting a 17 inch electric fan out of a ford from a mexicam used parts place. not sure what type of car or truck it came from. it has helped the heat problem a lot. other than the one time my friend let the temps get to 220 it has not been over 208. I just have to drive a lot slower up hills than I would like and have the power to do to not let the temps get too high. by the way what is safe to let the temps get up to. I would like to put in the stock fan with a modified shroud but the stock fan blades go past the side of the radiator and make a fan shroud prety much imposible to fit with a stock fan. any more sugestions. except on big hills now with the bigger electric fan the temps stay at 190. I wil be in guatamala in about a week and then heading down through central america to south america look fowart to seeing the cruisers there. I plan on puting in another thermostat just in case I got a bunk one from toyota. Other than the problem of getting a little hot it is great having a cruiser down here. seems like the diesel is better in mexico than the US has sulfer in it I think.

Good to hear you have the temps under control for now.

Keep us posted on your trip......

how mcuh room between the rad and the first obstruction block side. if you have enough room then you can build a custome shroud to compansate for the air flow from the rad to below and over. the local tin basher could probably build you one for cheap...
glad to hear the truck is running well.
got any pics of your trip?
safe trip
cheers

Check out Semana Santa in Antigua Guatemala. It's supposed to be a neat thing to see. They carpet the roads with painted sawdust in very elaborate pictures and designs. We'll be visiting there too since it's only 1/2 hour from where we live.
If you think Mexican hills are steep, you ain't seen nothing yet! Same goes for crazy drivers, especially the chicken buses.

Little off topic, I have had 4 customers who have traveled through Central America in the last year and two more into Mexico.

Unique buntch of guys, not many would venture that far.

One of my customers just go back and had some great stories.

His vacume pump went out on him, a small maching shop turnned down the shaft, sleeved it then put in a small keyway. Took forever and was very finiky work, but its still working a couple thousand miles later. They even had to rebuild the viens out of plastic as the originals were toast.

hummm, that is one thing i have NEVER seen is the veins worn out...that must have been quite the ooops...

You'd be surprised what you can get done here. At the school I work at in Guatemala City we've had gears made several times for various tools and equipment. We paid about $150 for the following last time: 1 bakelite gear about 3" dia & 1/2" thick c/w keyway, 1 3" steel gear, 1/2" thick with 5/8" threaded shaft & keyway and 2 plastic gears about 1 1/2" dia & 1/4" thick with six sided centre hole. They all look well made and finished properly.

I'd hate to think what that would cost stateside.

I'm thinking of getting some brass gears made up for the rear window of the FJ55 to replace the plastic gears that frequently break. Probably wouldn't be much more than the plastic gear would cost over the counter back home.

Don`t let the 55 guys get wind of that, they will be all over you for those gears.

Hey guys,
I'm still alive and made it through a beautiful drive on the island lumber roads. Did a bit of wheeling but mostly just bumpy dirt roads. I'm in bend Oregon right now visiting a friend then we head back to Cali. I can't say enough about how hospitable Rob (Raddcruisers) was and how fortunate we are to have him in our cruiser community. The only real issue I've had is the charging system. Pulled into a gas station outside of Portland after driving for 3 hours and the cruiser wouldn't turn over. After a jump I drove to Portland (alternator powering my headlights) and had the batteries tested again. One was fine and one wouldn't handle any load, hence no starts. Two new optimas (blemishes $100.00 for both!!!) and so far so good. The alternator charges at 26v at idle and around 28v above 1300 RPM's no load. Anyway, I'll check back in a little while. Happy Cruising!

p.s. Don't worry Dave, I'll get you that calender next week.

Great to hear all is well after our phone call the other night, guess jumping the 24 system off the first battery worked?

It was a pleasure having you visit and stay with us, I know you were game to venture deeper into the Island but your schedule did not permit.

Look forward to seeing you again soon, I suspect after your short journy to the west coast and your take on the Island we will see you in the near future.

And if your trip to Central America comes before. I am sure the MUD guys would like to follow your adventure. Sounds like a lap top tied into a cell phone for GPS and sending informatin to this forum will be needed.

Good luck David....
