Hey all,
I own a 1984 fj60 with a petrol 2f motor. Two days ago I was driving and it lost all power and almost stalled while driving, I managed to get it home and let it idle for 5 mins and then it drove fine. the next morning It drove a 2hr drive with no issues at all. however, on the way home 5mins down the road It lost all power again and stalled and now wouldn't start. I replaced spark plugs, put a new ignition condenser, new coil and a new set of points in her on the side of the road but still wont start. i have got clean fuel coming out of the fuel pump, carby is clean and has good float level, engine has no blow by and runs very quiet. I honestly cant think of what it may be.

Just wondering of any other ideas that may be causing this?
cheers

Is there spark? Power to the coil? If working alone, get a handheld starter button so you can simultaneously check things under the hood while cranking via the starter. Are they emissions equipped in AUSTRALIA?

No emissions rubbish ahaha, yeah ive got power to the coil and have spark

You could try running a 12V jumper wire to the coil once running and see if it dies driving around with it in place. Maybe the contacts in the electrical portion of the ignition switch have high resistance and is the intermittent cause of the cutting out.

For reference, I had a wire pull out of a connector on my fusible link but made intermittent contact causing a random no start/no power to a lot of components (lights, radio, etc) and shutting off to occur. Redid the wire and connection and went ahead and replaced the fusible link since I had some spares and all fixed. Jiggling the fusible link and associated wiring around caused the dash to light up and turn off which is how I located it. Once, I opened it up, it was clear it had been arcing.

When it dies, does any of the power on the dash turn off? Could be electrical issues with the fusible link just off the battery.
the dash and radio still works fine, when I crank it over sometimes it will have a little cough as if it wants to start but just doesn't, ill try reset my timing and valve clearances and then probably do an efi swap and hope that works
