History:
I bought the cruiser in north TX in 2004 with 136,500 miles. The original owner was George Krugers. He was a high school band teacher in Houston TX. He purchased the truck from Sterling McCall Toyota in 1984 for $15,513 (I have the original window sticker; see pictures). Unfortunately, he passed in 2004 and his wife sold the truck to me. His wife mentioned that his cruiser was his life. Indeed, he took great care of it and did all oil changes himself. I have many receipts from Toyota dealerships where he serviced the truck. When I handed over the money for the purchase his daughter began to weep. After getting her composure, she showed me how to fold the rear seat down (among other things) and pointed to the back passenger seat where she always sat on the many family road trips. I was extremely excited to get such a great FJ60 from great people. I write this story because that is what you will purchase; a great cruiser from someone who is honest and who truly cares about the cruiser’s “next home.”
For one year I used the cruiser as a commuter in north TX. I then moved to southern Indiana for 5 years (2004-2009). During this time, the cruiser was always garaged and used strictly as a weekend warrior. From 2009-2011, the cruiser has once again been used as a commuter in north TX. However, my new career path is forcing me to commute far distances. I’m not going to lie, FJ60s don’t make the perfect commuter. Thus, against my will, I am selling the beloved truck.
Upon my purchase, I have been an avid fan of cruisers. I have been browsing and contributing to IH8MUD since 2004 (THANKS WOODY!). In the last few years, my career and family have taken over some of my free time for this activity. I have also been a member of Lone Star Land Cruisers and Hoosier Cruisers. I have met great friends and no enemies. I will miss the Cruiser Crew!
Before my ownership, the truck was never driven off-road. I have taken it down many beaten paths, but have never hard-core off-roaded (rock-crawled). Therefore, there is absolutely no rock-rash or other major dents.
Mechanics:
I have treated the mechanics as the most important feature of my truck. I have changed all fluids, including differentials, transmission, transfer case, engine oil, clutch and brake reservoirs, radiator, on a schedule that was probably way too frequent, but hey, I like to know the inner workings of the beast and also to have an excuse to drink a beer while lying under an awesome truck. It kills me that my recent pics show the only time a non-OEM Toy oil filter has been used. I had to travel the last few months and decided to change the filter for good measures and an OEM “purist” filter was not available. I installed the man-a-fre oil return kit for good measures too. At the time, there were no leaks and there were no problems. I haven’t had a problem with it since the installation. MAF Oil Return Kit Transmission Transfer Case
The listed items are repairs, upgrades, etc. that I have done since my purchase. I have almost always used new OEM parts.
All smog equipment is functional and should pass any states requirements (I’ll bet even the republic of CA). I replaced all vac lines with McMaster-Carr tubing (part # 5041K52). These lines are perfect. Extra lines come with the sale. Almost all other hoses, gas lines etc. have been replaced. The smog (air) pump is a Cardone remanufacture. The pump works great and is quiet with no whiney sounds. Cardone Remanufactured 33-768 - Smog Air Pump | O'Reilly Auto Parts
New OEM alternator
New NGK plugs, OEM spark wires, distributor, cap, rotor.
New pcv valve/grommet.
New OEM gas tank cap.
New OEM air filter X4.
New OEM fuel filter X4.
New slave and master clutch cylinder. It shifts so damn smooth.
Front and rear differential breathers that end in the cab with a filter (see pics; passenger firewall).
Hella horns to beep beep beep at your fellow person that cuts you off because the cruiser is slow.
Hella H-4 ecode lamps in front to shine the way.
Hella 500 series driving lamps
Front and rear ARB bumper with hitch and ball. The trailer lights are functional. I used the cruiser to tow a small aluminum flat bottom boat. The bumpers are attached using grade 8 bolts.
New wiper arms and blades.
All new belts and like-new belts accompany the sale.
The power steering pump does not leak.
The battery tray has no rust.
SOR driver side seat foam Specter Off-Road Land Cruiser Parts - Page 308 Land Cruiser Upholstery Kits and Seat Cushions
Toyota OEM tool kit with 2 OEM jacks.
New OEM pedal pads for brake, clutch, gas.
OEM 12V light that plugs underneath the passenger dash.
Tires, including the spare, are BFG ATs 31X10.50 with many more miles to travel. The tread is worn, but the tires are still running strong.
New Magnaflow muffler and pipe that exits behind the rear driver side tire
New OEM shocks on all four legs.
OEM throttle-up capability for a winch (see pic bottom right of steering wheel).
OEM skid plate
New McMaster-Carr rubber inner wheel liners.
CCOT hood bumpers and acorn lug nuts.
All the glass is perfect. The rear defrost works great.
The interior is near perfect. Yes, there is the typical, but small, driver side seat rips. The carpet has few stains. The headliner, dash, back panels, etc. are near perfect. The 2 center air vents have been replaced with the outer vents so the air can be controlled.
The A/C works F’n awesome. It keeps me cool in 100 degree TX weather. There are no problems when engaging the compressor.
The body and frame etc. is perfect.
I also have Thule roof bars and gun racks that will go with the sale.
There is a lot of LC shwag to go along with the sale, including Trail Teams s*** and a huge stack of Toyota Trails Magazines. I hesitated to part with the shwag, but I figure if someone is serious, then they must be an enthusiast and deserve the history.
The FJ60 gas tank and seat belt recall were preformed before my purchase.
What is bad?
Very small surface rust on both rear wheel wells and on the front passenger windshield. Extremely minor surface rust on underbody components (see the pictures).
Driver-side front side turn signal needs a new bulb and connection.
Headlight washer reservoir leaks. Windshield and rear washers are perfect.
The OEM mud flaps were removed because of cancer and I used them as a rattle deterrent under the hood, which is missing the aged insulation (see pictures). This is my LC legendary solution.
There is a slight exhaust leak, which I believe to be somewhere near the J pipe. But, the cruiser runs strong and consistently gets 14 mpg.
The paint is original. However, the roof is in need of a bit of TLC. The paint is also a bit worn near the gas tank filler. However, there are no extreme rust spots anywhere on the vehicle.
The air intake is missing the intake hose, but it has not affected performance.
There is a small crack in the plastic dash border.
The bottom line is that this is a great FJ60.
Please let me know if you need more pictures or explanations.
I am dying inside to part with it.
PM me with questions.
Enjoy
,
Ben
