Hey guys. ok so i purchased 2 diesel pick ups a few months back. one was in a 83 complete truck 2wd 5spd long box the other was a late 80's what i think to be a turbo diesel? the second one had no turbo, no cab. harness snipped and condition of that engine is unknown.

basicly im looking to get pointed in the right direction for some information on the engine's.

my first issue is i have no clue as to what the engine code is.

id like to look into a rebuild kit.

i was also told that i can possibly take the intake off that newer one and put it on the older one and turbo it? the older one does run and is drivable, but i would like to swap it into my 81 project rock crawler.

thank you in advance and i apologize if i didnt look deep enough

IF it was Australian market, (Im not sure if it applys oversees) They would be the L series enigne, and both would be the 2L (2.4L) the turbo would prob be a 2L-TE

That's the 83. I couldn't find any decals or emissions details.

I will try that tomorrow after work. I've got the papers in the truck. If I can get it rebuilt and turbocharged I'm strongly leaning towards putting it in my 81 rock crawler project

Thank you

so this is all it shows up with? doesnt really say much about the truck

It actually tells you exactly what the truck is. It's a 1983 LN40.

You can use that information to select your vehicle in the Parts Reference section to get to this page where you can select trim packages. You have the 2.2 liter L engine. 1983 was the last year for that engine. Toyota transitioned to the 2L in the 1984 model year.

Hmmm ok. I guess to the untrained eye that ment nothing but to a person with the knowledge it ment more.

Thank you for your assistance!

These LN40 trucks with the L diesel are MY FAVORITE trucks of all time. So pleasant to drive, economical, reliable, fairly quiet and just plain neat. With regular timing belt service and some attention paid to driving habits to prevent overheating, I have had great luck with the L series engines. Just like the Toyota ads said for these trucks when they came out...."Oh, what a feeling!"

Is there any way to get more power outta them? Or should I be looking into the newer turbo diesel I have?

You need to be looking into a newer turbo'd diesel for more power. Once you go thru the effort to turbo the 1L, you will have maybe 5 more hp and high chance of head gasket failure.

Well.....funny you should ask about doing a turbo on an L engine :D
I got a 2.2L 'L' engine out of an 1981 Toyota 2WD pickup. It had about 130,000km on it, 500 compression (all 4). Did a refresh on the engine and after a lot of research and tons of help from some great guys on here I put a turbo on the little sucker. Requires a custom manifold and a turbo from a Mitsubishi (TD04-09). I also put a fuel pump from a 2LT on it (since I had one in great condition) and have the boost fuel advance on it which is very nice. I run up to 13PSI and it has a significant amount of power in the higher RPM/PSI range. You can really feel the turbo kick in. It does lack power in low RPM though. I'm still working out the details and setup so it's not finished, but overall it's been a great little engine. Will it work the same without the boost advance? don't think so. You might be able to modify the stock fuel pump to have boost advance though, but I have not taken it apart to see if that's possible. I do have the original pump still.
If you look in my signature you can see the "non-project-project-truck", jump ahead (past the pain and suffering of failed attempts) and see what I did. It has turned out to be a great little motor with the turbo on it.
