I like that idea, just to see how many of these "rustbuckets" are still rolling.
I believe there is a book coming out soon, followed by a movie. ;)
I'll throw mine # in as 3353231.
Will have to find production date later.
Shane

looks like 1/82

I gotcha. Now I just have to figure out what to so about the rust. Pilgrim or just cut n weld......

I'm pretty sure you can still buy a half tub from IPOR for less than half Pilgrim's price. Should be on their web site.

Sales volumes for FJ40-60

I have seen production nos. but can no longer find them. Can someone help here. How many 1982 fj-40s were produced? Thanks, Mike

I got this info from Toyota Customer Relations, from 1973 to 1980 they combine the FJ40/FJ55 and did not report these separately and then in the early 1980's they did the same thing with the FJ40/60 so they combined the two models in the totals.

I believe that this same info was given to either Cool Cruisers of Texas or TLC? I cut and paste the 1984 info from one of their websites but only for that year since that's what I own. I know that I saw it on one of their websites but couldn't find it yesterday so I called Toyota.

Year....Units Sold....Series / Models

1973......11,218........FJ40 / FJ55
1974.......8,204........FJ40 / FJ55
1975.......9,050........FJ40 / FJ55
1976.......9,236........FJ40 / FJ55
1977.......9,924........FJ40 / FJ55
1978.......8,858........FJ40 / FJ55
1979.......5,716........FJ40 / FJ55
1980.......3,058........FJ40 / FJ55
1981.......2,027........FJ40 / FJ60
1982.......3,088........FJ40 / FJ60
1983.......4,805........FJ40 / FJ60
1984.......4,037........FJ60
1985.......4,740........FJ60
1986.......4,475........FJ60
1987.......5,008........FJ60

She would have kept looking for the FJ62's but I didn't want to spend any more time on the phone. Hope that this helps.:steer:

Old thread revival, but I'm doing some research on a recent acquisition:

I have #3357640 with an August, 1982 build date.

2 questions:
  • Would this truck be a 1982 or 1983 model?
  • Did later FJ40s ever come with the chrome version of the common white "wagon wheel" (ala FJ60 or FJ62?)
This is a VERY complete, VERY original, later-year truck, and I'm trying to assess the practicality of completely restoring it.

Thanks.

@dnp, check the dashboard. As far as I am aware, the only major difference would be the bolt-in 1983 dash. However, according to post 9 in this thread, your frame number may be short of the initial 1983 models by a bit: 1982 fj40 production no. ?

For the record, I currently own a 12/81 with VIN ending in 3350634.

It's interesting, looking at the numbers and build dates, the factory must have received a delivery of 20K frames or something in the late 1981. My frame 347932 with a build date of 11/81 is way before some of the 335#s of summer '82. They must've been pulling them out of storage randomly, so the sequence is not a good marker for build date except in general terms.

That's the same thing I was thinking......until I realized the person who posted the VIN "start dates" was using 6 vs. 7 numbers. Your 11/81 is VIN 347932, and my 8/82 is VIN 357640. That's 9,708 units apart, so numerically, it's possible. I was confused at first, because I was comparing my last 7 digits, when I realized the reference post was only using 6.

My 1984 FJ40 RHD from Aus has the following:
369774
7/84
Maybe one of the very last off the assembly line?
