I have seen production nos. but can no longer find them. Can someone help here. How many 1982 fj-40s were produced? Thanks, Mike

no one knows for sure.......

I thought I saw approx. 300 some where but cant find it any more. Still trying to settle an insurance claim. Ok lets go at this from a different angle. Who has the lowest no.production wise on their frame? Who has the highest production no. on their frame? Thanks, Mike

One of the more prone to rust year models....

Mike,

If you're looking for worldwide production numbers from January 1982-January 1983, there were 8,754 manufactured for the worldwide market with an additional 143 built to Euro standards.

As most manufacturers have model years that start months before an actual calendar year, and as many dealers have been known to date a model based on when THEY sell it, the above numbers can vary.

If you are looking for the number of FJ40s that entered the US market during the 1982 calendar year, Toyota USA hasn't released that separate figure. And then again, there are the 1982 models that entered the USA AFTER calendar year 1982 in all the years since then, both LHD and RHD.

Or...are you searching for numbers for the FJ40 version with the removable dash, often referred to as a "1983" here in the US? Worldwide production of those models ended in November 1984 at the Japanese plant. Conventional wisdom has it that "around 300" of those models originally entered the US prior to 1984. I believe someone once asked Marv Spector this very same question and the "300" number was his estimate as well.

Good luck with your insurance adjuster--hope he has a brain, and a heart.

the 83 us FJ 40's had the removable dash, some had the non US wing window's, I think the 300-ish # is correct

I am sure(but its been ages) i have read that there were 1000-ish 82's that came into the US, I have had 2 82's, still have 1 Yooper has the other

my John Deere Green 82 was made in June 1982

From the late model parts manual, the given production numbers - all from the TMC Honsya Plant:

1983 start frame #361221 - 1982 start frame #352467 = 8654 FJ40's built.
On top of that, some were made for EEC (whatever that is) = 143 more FJ40's. These built for EEC frame #'s begin with 810154 & 850025. Ten units were built beginning with the 85#.
Looks like a total number of 1982's built = 8797 units

By comparison, there were 6249 1983's built.
58 of them were for EEC.

And for 1984, at least 4761 FJ40's plus 1 for EEC was built.
I say at least because the tables show the start frame number of each month (I assume) and not the last frame number of each month.
They quit production in 11 / 1984.

The last frame #s mentioned are 372173 and 810380 and 850047.

Hi John. I think that 1500-ish number is on the high side. There were slightly more than 3,000 FJ 40's and 60's imported and sold in the US in 1982. I've never seen a breakdown in numbers between the two models, but most of them were 60's. When I bought my '82 someone (that I trusted) told me the number of 40's sold in the US was less than 300 for the 1982 model year. I can't remember who told me that but I'm thinking it was Marv Specter. I also heard that same figure, under 300, from Henry Cubillan (Exiled), and Mike Denison, the owner of Cruiser Corps. I doubt anyone knows for sure.

Mike,

On SOR's site (FAQs:Frame Numbers) you might get what you need. If you're looking for 82 model year, I suppose you'd want to look at 7/81-6/82 or something. Anyway, doesn't help you get any closer to US import numbers though. I went shopping for one in the summer of '82, but the dealer said basically the entire production run was bought up for use in the Middle East (I guess as technicals in Beirut or something).

btw - Mike, was it you looking for a late 40 frame on the 3FE list a couple of months ago?

So you guys saying nine isn't an 82? Or am I misreading your numbers. In theory I have an early 82? I got the number off my title so I don't know the production date......
