1981 BJ44

IMG_0037.JPG

This is a 1981 BJ44 Toyota LandCruiser.
2B Diesel Engine
4 spd manual transmission
Quite late model split style transfer case
Front disk brakes, rear drum brakes.
Brand new head gasket, side cover gasket, intake, exhaust, water pump and thermostat housing gaskets.

New front calipers
New genuine Toyota front down pipe. Hooked to factory exhaust. Needs rear muffler replaced still.
This has factory A/C (not currently charged)
Factory heating system (Broken housing on blower motor)
Extended mid wheel base 44 series gives an awesome driving experience. If you have ever driven a short wheel base 40 series you will appreciate the more refined ride of the mid wheel base!!

Holy big picture batman! Maybe edit that one down a bit.

I thought the 44 has a non removable hardtop, not that I am very familiar with them. Does it come with a top at all?

I left the picture large so show detail. the price is $10,500. we are selling it for the most part as is however he have a couple hundred Land Cruisers for parts so anything can be added or modified on this vehicle .

I think it's a 1980 or 1981 and not an 82. The 82 should have the newest style dash plate, OEM rear metal fender lips, and the rad inlet should be on the other side. It is most likely late model 80 or very early 81.

Didn't the fancy dash plate come out in 1983 like the USA cruisers? Also, it has a split case, plastic console, parking brake at the rear drums, and a 1981 or newer frame. I'd say it's an '82!

My 82BJ42 has non plate dash like US models FYI

The JDMs started getting the dash plate in late 1981. The split case came out in 8/80 (1981) with the rear drum e-brake, The console would also be a 1981 model year addition. Frame changes were made for 1979 and later with the new tubs.

So, it's not an 1980, but for it to be a JDM 1982 it would need the fender lips, dash plate and the 3B style 2B. By this I mean that in mid 1981 MY toyota stared using all of the radiators and electrical setups from the 3B engine instead of the B engine. All of the glow, edic, and injectors are 3B parts instead of B parts. the fastest way to tell if this is the case with a 2B is to look at the Rad hose inlet. In the later 3B style egines, they switched the inlet side to clear the then regular addition of power steering from the right to the left..

My rig is mid MY 1981 with 3b style 2b, oem steel fender flares, dash plate, etc. So unless this truck has been rebuilt (which from the heavy bondo on the door, the non-oem roll bar (for a 44, that is a 40/42 roll bar), it is not a 1982.

Oh, in addition, the later 1981 and newer BJ44 also had a compound driver's side wiper assembly that would have had a much larger post. This one has the standard single arm post. They also should have had the fender mount mirrors wich would have moved rthe apron badges forward to just behind the turn signals. There is a guy in this section selling a white one that is a mid 1981 later rig. Check it out for the differences.

I'll bet anyone a beer that this has a vin/frame number lower than BJ44-02000.

P.S. Not that it's not a nice rig, I just wanted to let anyone intersted know the year the rig most likely was. I am not insinuating any malicious intent as these rigs (the JDM BJ44s) did not have any MFG or MY date on any inspection plate anywhere. For some reason toyota never put a date on these rigs and therefore it can be tough to nail down the MY.

Here is the link to that other 1981...

His is even later than mine as he got the stock tachometer!

This rig is now parked in my garage......Thanks James :steer:

BreckenridgeCruiser you said, ".....the non-oem roll bar (for a 44, that is a 40/42 roll bar), it is not a 1982." Do you have any pics of a proper 44 Roll Bar?

As far as I know, the BJ44, didn't always come with one... I have seen pictures of a stock one where the large head bar is the same, but the support legs are longer to reach the back of the tray. In the EPC, it shows a short one like yours, but the part numbers don't match up with 40/41/42 rigs, which means that they are probably a different part and they just reused the drawing as the soft tops were very rare. Most BJ44s were stock hard tops... Oh, and not all soft tops came with the roll bar... to make it even more confusing.

As an idea... if you want a full roll bar that looks stock, I am doing one with two of the large bars and using the stock brackets to hold a straight tube between the two. I am hoping to put them high enough where they don't block the middle of the window on the hard top side.

Thanks. Any pics you could post?

Soft top version does not have roll bar and would be difficult to install with the factory 3 man jump seats I know I have one also the 82 has intermitent wiper setting

Roll bar pics

Here are some pics.

The EPC has them with a roll bar, but you have to remember that the 44 came with a ton of options, including two different suspensions. The roll bar is SUPER rare it seems in the 44.

The pics I'm attaching are of two Euro spec 44s and have the bar I was describing. They are not the best pics, but you can see the bar through the window on the soft top and see the length of the support bar on the yellow one.I do not have any pics of my pending setup...

I have the intermittent wiper feature too... Dieseler, does yours sometimes make a bit of noise when in intermittent mode?
