***RUSTIC-LOOK BUT DRIVES LIKE A BRAND NEW ONE!

Always great to start the sales pitch with a far fletched claim! :-) At least now you know the rest of the information can be ignored.

It’s fetched,not fletched.

Not mine.

What do you guys think of this one? I hope everyone is staying healthy btw.

You didn't ask for advice but I'm going to give you some anyway. I am 4 1/2 years into the search for and acquisition of my 40. The gentleman above this post offered to help. I brushed him off. Mistake. I purchased a 1980 very drivable and restorable rig. Once I got it home I decided I wanted to restore it. Problem. I am not a mechanic or body man. My rig is in about a hundred boxes in 3 different rooms of my home and my garage is now a work hazard. It will be another year to year and half before it will be back together. I am not able to enjoy it. I will be almost 64 before I can take it on the many adventures I bought it for. Decide now. What you want to do with a 40. Drive it or restore one. If you want to restore it and are unable to do the work yourself it will take longer than you plan for and will cost you twice what you budgeted. I should have saved a little more money and let Overton find me a rig and I would be smiling now instead of constantly frustrated at the lack of time and money available to see my dream to fruition. I do not know Overton other than his reputation here on Mud. Do yourself a favor and at least talk to him. Sorry for the long post. Now back to my never ending project.

tstepp920,

Awesome advice for sure! I am in the market but having trouble finding a decent 20K drivable 40 series versus a 20K pig with lipstick.

tsstep920 is correct about @overton

If you decide to look into the 82 - I would advise you see it first or get in touch with someone local in San Diego to check it out.
(I've seen it in person)

What is your opinion on the cruiser ???

I seriously got involved in trying to buy three different FJ40's and than talked with Overton. He found what I wanted at a price I identified. Call him.

Appreciate the kind words - Re: The white 82 I posted. I have not seen it in person but I have worked with the owner and he’s a straight up guy. The 82 need some rust remediation and mechanical work as well but that is a $40k plus truck when it’s done so there is room to spend money it. As always, have her checked out by someone in person. Preferably a mechanic. The all need “something.”

I was looking at the photos in the link above. One thing I noticed about the 79 FJ40 is that there were no side defrost ducts. It doesn't even have the holes to where the ducts attach to. After 1978 it should have the side defrost ducts. Body swap from an earlier model or foreign vehicle?

Negative. mine is a may of 1980 and does not have the side defrost nozzles.

There are many '79 and '80 bulit 40's without the defrost ducts. I have a 2/79 that came without them. It must have been optional for a spell.

That one looks pretty original. Appears to have been de-smogged but its an honest representation of what to expect. No lipstick on that one. It has factory power steering so that's a plus. You definitely have some room for negotiating at that price.

FYI, I looked at this 40 the first day it was listed for sale. Here are the problems I found with it.

Body: Front floor mats have been glued down over obviously rusty front floors, rear floor has some holes towards the back, rain gutter has several rusted out places, some rust at bottom of front doors. Paint a couple of different shades in areas owner says it has some bondo.

Mechanical: drive train has a whine particularly at higher speeds. Seller says it is in the transfer case (all fluids have been changed). It is not a clutch throw out bearing or rear end.
The distributor is from an earlier model and has points??? Power steering gear box is leaking.

Interior: new seat covers over tired, old, foam. No floor mats or headliner.

It is at a dealer and been "fixed up" to sell. Dealer said it had been sitting a long time before he bought it. His comment was an older gentleman had it who had died. His son used it for a while afterwards and abused it.

Disclamer: this is just my assessment of it.

Thanks. I kind of had my eyes on it and you saved me a trip to check it out. I’ll let them sit on it a while, and if they still have it maybe I can beat them down.
