Hi All

I have just purchased a 1979 BJ40 with a 3B engine installed. The body and chassis seem to be in pretty good nick. There is a bit of rust in the rear sill left rear quarter and in both front floor pans. The body mounts look good and the chassis looks darn good. The rain sill on the hard top is shot.

I will look to repair the rear sill (looks like it will be a fairly large job), the floor pans and the rain sill. There is a Donaldson filter fitted at the moment and I am not a fan of the look so will look to find a factory air cleaner for now. If any one has one feel free to let me know. Also if anyone wants the Donaldson PM me.

Yes. I'm keen for engine bay pics too Terry.

What's the bulge in the roof? Has the PO installed a skylight?

Another nice Sky Blue BJ40/42

country of origin?

He's in the lucky country. AUSTRALIA. See his signature line.

And there's no need to import any BJ40/42 cruisers there.

The bull bar and donaldson air cleaner scream AUSTRALIA anyhow!

:D

Pretty sure that is a roo bar, not a bull bar. I'm no expert, but the bull bars are typically half the size of a good roo bar. ;-)

The bulge on the roof is the LH Rear Flare that has fallen off.

Yep Australia. The Donaldson, Bullbar and the rear bumper extension that is welded on will all be going as soon as I pick her up.

Engine bay pics for all to see.

Hi Tom
What FSM do you use for your truck and do you have an electronic copy that you could send me? Also keen for some pics of your dash as the dash in this has a few extra switches and has been hacked up a bit (75mm hole cut in to the left of the column and the factory radio slot has been butchered) I am looking to fab up some repairs for these when I get a chance. Also keen for some pics of your engine bay if possible as some stuff has been moved around in mine to fit the second battery tray that I will probably remove in the future.

Nice... love the vent window doors

It looks like it might have been hit at some point. The panel gaps between the left and right front quarters are uneven and slightly to the drivers' side where they meet the body. Might be worth some investigation.

Spectre,
If by drivers side you mean left hand (this is an Australian RHD model), the front left fender is loose. The PO had started to do some repairs and has just bolted everything back together loosely.

Hi Tom

You always need two FSMs for any Toyota AFAIK. One for the "Chassis & Body" and one for the "Engine".

I think the best "Chassis & Body" for your 1979 BJ40 is "publication number 98154 - 1978 edition" (I haven't come across a 1979 edition yet so I doubt one exists.) But alternatively the "Aug 1980 Chassis & Body 36044" would do pretty well and is what I was using for most of my BJ40 ownership (and still refer to from time to time).

As for the engine, since you have a transplanted 3B, I think the best FSM would be "Aug 1980 B-series Engine repair manual 36047".

You shouldn't have a problem getting a hard copy of the Chassis & Body FSM on eBay in Australia but the engine FSM may be a bit harder.

Here ya go:

(The two chrome toggles and little red lights are modifications I've done in moments of weakness.)

Always keen to show that off too ;):

If you are referring to the bad gap (1) in the pic below then I think the PO may have done that when fitting the snorkel.

BTW - What are 2 and 3 in your engine bay pic Terry?
2 looks like it could be an air compressor an 3 perhaps is a group of relays for the air compressor, dual battery setup, lights or whatever.

And I suppose you know your washer bottle is non-OEM (but OEM or OEM-style may be hard to get without paying an arm and a leg).

And personally I'm not keen on exhaust headers on 40-series, especially a diesel. They seem to me to be a waste-of-space and a source of extra engine-bay-heat - which is something I think you want to avoid - especially in Australia.

PS. I like your ideas for bringing it back closer to to OEM.

Just noticed something more.

The thermostat housing looks like it is off the original B-engine because I believe the 3B uses 3-bolts to secure the top section on.

This might be worth noting because your PO may have transferred other items too from their original B-engine onto the 3B during the engine transplant work. (Knowing this may avoid you some parts-sourcing errors that tend to arise when vehicles aren't true to their production-date.)

PS. I'm not criticising your transplanted engine. (I think a 3B like yours is definitely a better engine overall than my B.)

PPS. Do you still have the EDIC system? (PO's typically trash that ... especially when doing engine transplants.)

Thanks for the info and the pictures Tom. Your truck looks really neat.

The guard is loosely fitted at the moment which more than likely causes this gap.

2 is a horn and 3 seemed to be a bunch of relays. There are some spotlights fitted to the bar, and I suspect that the wiring has been moved around a bit. When I pick the truck up I will be having a good look at the loom and doing my best to get it back to stock.

As for the washer bottle and headers, I will be trying to find a donor wreck to get some OEM gear.

You are right Tom, the 3B housing does have 3 bolts. The EDIC system is still there. The PO put a new motor in as it did not have one and it works as advertised now.
