Need some help with information on this part, searching doesn't bring up much of anything. Does the speedometer cable run through this? Could it contribute to my speedometer not working?

Looks like speedo cable in, speedo cable out. My guess is yes, could be a contributing factor. Can you bypass and connect the cable direct to the dash speedo?

Yes, it's a 2 cable system. You can buy a single cable and bypass it all together. When I bought my 75 it was missing the second half from the box back to the tanny. I just bought a single cable in case the transmission box was defective. Didn't know why the PO removed the lower cable.

Each cable was about $20 or the single was mid $20s, I pulled the one cable and made sure it turned from the box to the speedo, but without knowing the otherside I didn't want to chance wasting the money, that's why I went to the one cable. You can probably figure out if the cable broke or the transfer box broke, odd design. Good Luck

No real information from Pighead, just hearsay and innuendo. And rumors. There may be an odometer-like numbers roll inside, or maybe not. At certain mileage (or kilometerage) it would light up a light on the dash, allegedly.
Most folk would simply yank that out and replace with a regular speedo cable. It was cable turning gears which turned a cable and measured stuff in the middle.
It could certainly contribute to a speedo not working. There are half a dozen reasons for a speedo not working, unless you are still under warranty, I would consider omitting that piece.

ah interesting...thanks i'll look into removing. Just removed the end that goes into the housing on the transfer case and it was shredded so that's probably part of it too.

Just bypass with something like that?

yeah thats probably all of it.
buy a second cable when you get the one piece....ive found that they can be fairly short lived. the one i currently have on has been surprisingly long legged.
