1974 FJ40 ignition switch location

My ‘74 ignition switch is on the column. I visited a modified ‘74 that had the ignition switch on the face of the dash.

What might explain the difference?

The early ones had the ignition switch on the dash. The later columns (~1972) had the the switch in the column. Possibly some kind of re-body or column swap situation.
 
The story of the left side dash ignition switch…..Porsche…..originated at Le Mons, back when the drivers ran across the track. It gave the driver the opportunity to start the engine and simultaneously put the car in gear just to get that extra 1/10 of a second head start.

I like to think Mr. Toyota had the same thought in mind for Land Cruisers…..if you were being charged by a rouge Rhinoceros or a hungry Lion in the African Bush….i would want that extra 1/10 of a second to start the engine and simultaneously put her in gear…..🤣🤣🤣🤣

I read this and now all I can think about is that every trail ride should have a Le Mans start. :rofl:
 
9/72 Toyota changed the steering box and column. The new column has the more modern ignition switch in the column. These had a locking option in some markets but not the US. To my knowledge the 40 series never had any type of starter lock out that needed either the shifter in neutral or clutch pedal pushed in.

They didn’t start doing that ‘till Y2K….my 2002 Carrera has a clutch interlock. My 2020 Land Cruiser has a brake interlock. As @chatliemeyer007 stated, they are all a pain in the aress.

If you are so incompetent not to push the clutch in when you start the rig, maybe you should spend you hard earned money on a Tesla🤣🤣🤣🤣

Had an 84 4x2 pu that had a clutch safety switch and a button to override it.

Your 2020 I would assume is keyless start. Our 04 4Runner and 2010 Sequoia both use keys you just turn and release. Computer controls the starter. The 2018 4runner just traded off still required the key to be turned until started. Know my FJ62 needs to be park or neutral to start. To move the transfer case high low shifter transmission has to be in neutral. While I always do it foot does not need to be on the brake to shift transmission out of park. Replaced for the 18 4Runner has a keyless enter and start. So now another thing for an old man to remember.
 
Like me, 5 different cars, all have their startling quirks…..and when you’re 70, it’s hard to remember which one your in to get is started.

However, the Carrera and the 68 Land Cruiser are the easiest to remember….key to the left, left foot on the clutch….start ‘un. And for sure I have to admit, spending several minutes looking for the key slot in the 2020 Land Cruiser….before I remembered it had a push button🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
