Does the original coil, Nippondenso 90919-02015, have an internal resistor? I do not see a ballast resistor in the engine compartment?

Is there an equivalent replacement?

Assuming the previous owner just removed the ballast, can I replace the coil with one that has internal resistor?

Here are some options

In my opinion - if your using stock ignition- you want the 2 separate circuits to the coil as the full voltage at start up get you a hotter spark.

running a stock ignition with full battery to the coil will result in damaging the points on a stock setup. Also, I believe that the coil will be out of spec with heat- if it’s the correct coil for your rig.

It is my understanding that early coils did not have internal resistors and needed external resistors. Later coils had internal resistors and no longer needed external resistors. What you need to determine is does your existing coil have internal resistor, thus no need for external resistor, or no internal resistor in which case you need to add the external resistor. Check wiring diagrams for the proper wiring of each.

Wiring diagrams I've found are a bit confusing, some show a resistor, some don't.

The only feed to the coil is one wire from the ignition switch, no duplicate wire from the starter which would have bypassed the resistor. The previous owner could have changed the wiring.

I am going to trace the wire to ensure it is not a resistive wire, but crossing the number on the coil, and previous answer, indicates an internal resistor.

Since I only drive this in the summer, No issue with starting, so I'm leaning to an internal resistor coil, avoids adding a ballast and wiring.

Is there a resistance number I can check on the coil primary to determine if it is internal resistor? What is the resistance of an internal resistor coil vs. non?

Thank you. I measured the coil, 3,1 ohms, and the wire to it from the ignition switch is not a resistive wire.

So, I ordered an internal resistance coil.
