I would like to replace the fuel tank on a 67 FJ40. I can't find an OEM source anywhere, and with Onur gone I'm not sure where to even turn. Do they still exist? If not, can a later model be fit in the stock location without major alteration? Otherwise, I will probably try to rehab the one that is there, and could use some pointers on that process. Thanks.

I've seen him as well, he even commented over on my diesel thread yesterday. I think the loss is real. Anyone else have any thoughts? This tank is for the yet-to-be-unveiled patina 67 I found.

I have a good stock tank I was about to list for sale.

Thanks. I'm not 100% sure mine needs to be replaced, though if I could find an OEM new I would just do it as baselining. If they don't exist anymore, I will pull mine and see how it looks.

sor.com has them with very slight modifications for your year.
Thanks, somehow I had missed that on the page and only saw the 68+ tanks. Any idea how extensive the "fill neck modifications" are to make it fit? Will I need to have it cut and welded?

I do not believe any cut/welding is needed. There is a rubber radius that goes from steel neck to steel filler on the body. You may have to get some gasoline resistant tubing there that will fit. Pretty easy.

I SWEAR I searched for this answer, only to have a perfect match already exist as a thread :notworthy: Oh well, I'll continue to TRY not to litter the forum with stupid questions. Many thanks for the help.

I am not a good thread searcher. I just remembered that I had answered the question myself.

And as a small plug for my business, I’d like to add that I readily provide post-sale tech on the products I sell...including fuel tanks. ;)

I absolutely will be needing some of the parts from your stock. This 67 FJ40 was converted to a SBC by the original owner in the 1990s, by a Toyota dealer of all places. I'm going to need to figure out what is OEM, what is GM, and I need to decide what to do with the drivetrain. The swap is part of the history, and this is a nice rust free original that will keep it's original paint, so the SBC isn't totally "wrong" for it. Since it's already been modified, I don't have it in me to take it back to an F motor, but I might take it back to all Toyota with a 2F, 4 spd, split case, disc axle swap in. Or, just run the SBC/3 spd and upgrade the brakes. Certainly easier and cheaper. At any rate, the frankentruck will need old parts, and I'll definitely need some advice, so there will be some part orders coming in the future. Thanks for the help. - Steve

Reviving an old thread. My fj40 is Feb. 1968 and I'm looking to get a replacement tank. We're still in process of pulling it so not sure how bad the rust is. There is a leak at the filler neck and lots of rust inside the tank, I have to change the fuel filter every 500 miles or so before it fills with rust flakes. It stinks when sitting so I'm sure there are other pinhole leaks. I haven't been able to find early 1968 tanks anywhere, which I imagine are the same as 67? In other threads looks like there may have been a change in Oct. 68. Is the filler tank mod for early 68 using a 10/68 tank or 1972 tank? Lots of 72's out there for cheap if they can be made to fit. I'm nervous to clean and weld, or replace with a smaller custom tank?
