After launching yesterday I was unable to shift into gear. I was able to drift to the guest dock and tried to adjust my cables with no success. Pulled boat, took it home and went surfing.
I expected it to be just the cables, but after unhooking the cables and moving the prop with my foot I was unable to shift into gear. (sad face).
I then drained the oil. It looked of good color and quantity so I started to feel a little bit better. After that I removed the lower end, wrapped up the motor and bagged all parts at that phase.

Cleaned up a work space, and brought it inside to look at.

While Reading the manual, I took off the prop. The manual then called for the removal of the gears N such, but I wanted to first check out the area of the shift shaft. After removing the plastic cover this is what i saw:

So I removed the bolts holding on this cover, and noticed I could shift into gear and neutral. Back to the manual which told me this shaft unscrews.
After removing the shaft and freeing it from the stuck collar, I rescrewed in the shift shaft and was able to shift from front to neutral to back like butter.
THis pictuer shows some of the parts i will replace. Including the sacrificial zinc.

Close up:

Here is my Question: Do I need to press out and replace the piece that the o-rings sit in?
That round blob is a collection of corrosion that was binding. The water pump is fairly new and I'm a bit surprised that the PO's marine mechanic did not notice this corrosion happening here.
OH and here is the looks of the faces of my crew when I told them that it was not a big deal and the boat would be back in the water shortly
