Yes me too underneath with similar set up snapped /bent spanners trying to get it out and in, I did find an easier access months later only by mistake.
Take you air box out, I ended up undoing my new sender by hand, and tightening up by hand, just as an exercise to see if was possible, too easy !
I would say to date all the bits I be played with the cruiser the oil sender removal was no doubt the job that left me most bitter, $&@#%£ prick of a job :bang: , I'm getting emotional about it , "............I'm outta here

Put beer in fridge, 1st attempt at removing sender unit unsuccessful. Get beer drink beer 2nd attempt undo unit 2degree turn not enough to flip spanner. 2nd beer time and so on! At least a finished 6pack by the end of the job

Glad I did it though. Just should have done it when I had the engine out!!

I got my 88 BJ74 a few days ago and after checking the oil I was driving around in mud and fog having fun.

I noticed that the oil pressure registered towards low on the gauge and that the engine temp also showed low according to its gauge.

I searched old threads and have read that low oil pressure readings are common: I'm hoping that is true. I bought some Rotella oil and a cheap mechanical gauge to confirm oil pressure. Should I do anything else?

I also read that the cooling system thermostat opens to let coolant flow and in that position it blocks the flow elsewhere... where?

Thanks for any help.

Hi jblueridge,

Unfortunately, low oil pressure could be caused by many different things relating to the flow of the oil in your vehicle (i.e. a faulty oil pressure gauge, a clogged oil filter, or even worn main rod bearings and crankshaft journals). Therefore, we would respectfully suggest that you have a qualified technician check out your engine.

Shell Rotella Team,
Thanks. I would be willing to bet the first thing a qualified tech would do is connect an oil pressure gauge to see how much the engine is really making. I will do that myself. If I get a low reading I will go look deeper. If any of your team members want to come and help me out that would be great!

Hey jblueridge, I got my adapted in, and as mentioned I took out airbox and removed that way. My pressure read well and within limits, happy days,
A couple things a learned along the way on this removal, wait till engine is cold, easier to undue the sender, and ensure you tighten the adapter up tight, as my secondary thread where you screw the mechanical pressure gauge in leaked as I did not nip the button up enough, had oil spray out everywhere on Sunday while at beach,
I was washing down on Sunday evening and noticed my front diff looked like it was beading from the water, which is not normal, went and checked today, and discovered the button on adapter had leaked oil out, ,,,,just needs to be given some more tough love.
