Quick question.....

Is it not possible to have the stock Alt. that we have in our cruisers re-wound to put out this amperage? I have no clue, but was told that you could just have your alternator rewound for higher output???

anyone have an answer for this?

I have heard that they can be rewound, but tend to run quite a bit hotter and have a considerably shorter lifespan. No actual experience though.

I just dropped off a generator at the local alternator shop and asked them your question. They said that alternators could be rewound for higher output. They did in fact sometimes purchase rewound stators for more amps. Along with the rewound stator the guy said it is a good idea to get the rotor rewound with heavier wire. Then, he said the rectifier and diode size should be increased as they were sized for the original output. Another comment was one of the reasons they run hotter is they then have higher output in the same small case size (and maybe with the above mentioned smaller sized components). He said the best and most economical way was to find a higher output alternator that could be made to mount up. In other words if a person has a unique alternator or the location is such that nothing else will fit; then rewinding is an option, albeit expensive.

I have no way of knowing if what he said is true or not and it is from my recollection of the conversation so take it fwiw.

thanks for the answer bill. that makes sense.

We have a oem bolt on alternator 175 amp we have had it on our rig for 1 year . They are ready to buy $240.00 plus shipping

i'll take a $50 unit from a wrecked tundra and a cheap bracket from bjowett, but thanks. ;p

TTT Any word on these brackets?

No word on these brackets? I want to change my alternator and belts but would like to do this mod at the same time. Trying to stay patient.

Just saw this thread... if you're still accepting orders, please count me in. :)

still in, but would like tosee some results from guys using bracket and upgraded alternators

I'm in also.

tally another - I'm in on this bracket project assuming it won't be too much $$

I'm still in for this Brian. Thanks

I'll take 1 or 2 depending on price.

Sent PM.

Thanks

Things take forever, I'm bad enough, but when you rely on others (that are nice enough to even offer up the service) things can take a very long time...

I've been speaking with Photoman and he has come up with a trick bracket that he might be able to produce a bit more quickly... it will cost more but still might fit everone's budget. So this project might pass on over to him as not only is everyone waiting for a bracket, but I've not assembled the front of my 80 in order to keep access to this bracket location easy for development... Bill should be chiming in shortly.

Let's get this thing movin'!
