howdy.

since my 12H-t powered HJ-61 is getting streetworthy soon I am planning on intercooling it, just wondering what size of a cooler I should go with (air to air front mounted).

is 24x12x3 inch (length/height/thickness) too big?

I´ve seen alot of coolers but their size varies very much, and since the 12H is a pretty big engine shouldn´t it need a rather big cooler?

in my 2H Turbo setup ..

I have done the air flow calcs for the 12h-t and at 3000rpm (the max that I do) the airflow is the same as a Subaru 2 litre engine at 6000 or 6500rpm, so a smaller size can do the job

Based on this I have an air-water cooler off a 2l subaru and have it mounted in my HJ61 but not hooked up.
The radiator and pump are plumbed in but not powered yet.

Work is on hold until we have a house to live in. We are living in a tent until our barn is built, then the barn until the house is finished.

Anyhoo, I have followed Tapages install with interest and cant wait to get my set up running to see how well it all works.

Search the forum using HJ61 and you will find some links and pictures. One 60 with a big cooler like you intend but no mention of how well it worked

cheers
Gerard

Nice looking end tanks on that Talos, lot of people using cheap chinese charge coolers, look the part but as the saying goes....
Wouldnt think you`d need any bigger though, keep the pipes at 2.5inch etc.

That's too big. You need to think about pressure drop and cooling issues with such a large intercooler. Imagine all the air that cannot get through to your radiator...

I would suggest something smaller. Like an SW20 (2nd gen MR2) intercooler. Small, compact, and can support upwards of 400hp.

I'm also pay atention to the turbo lag issue .. ( IMOP the important point ) coz in hi rpm engine you can compensate it but in a slow and old diesel are more complicated.

Find a diesel tech shop in your area that does a lot of Banks/Bully Dog etc etc upgrades and they will have TONS of Ford/Chebby/Dodge stock intercoolers laying around. I'd find one of them and if you have to cut it down.

Are there a lot of Ford/Chevy/Dodge diesel trucks out in Iceland, Talos? If so, I agree with Guy... could be cheaper too...

Tapage, you bring up a good point. Turbo lag is horrible on a low rpm engine. Gotta look out for that too.

..as a matter of fact the big diesel trucks from the US are very popular over here so I might try to source me a cooler from one of them, or have one made, costs around 300$-ish, and I could have in inlets and outlets the way I want them, the only thing was like I said the overall size of the thing :)

12ht in hj47 interested in outcome on your inter cooler
I was looking at celica st185 intercooler core size
235x235x65mm

I went with a unit intended for a 1.8L civic (i think it was) Pressure drop is 2-3psi and cooling is great. I don't notice turbo lag, maybe because I am always in boost:

it's only 2.25" thick and I still had to cut my grill to get it to fit. No noticeable difference on engine temps but it did drop EGTs 100*

This is what I've done. Total cost was about US$400. Schweet. Intercooler is 450x230x65mm. Had a bonnet donated to me so rednecked it and cut a hole in and raised it to see if any engine cooling issues arise. No problems. Boost is @ 0.7bar. Original bonnet is going to get cut this week. Fibreglass bonnet scoop to be fitted trying to imitate the look of 7x V8 D4Ds.
