Whatever came in the Toyota gasket set. I didn't go searching for anything fancy.

Original one lasted 35 years, so it can't be that bad.

Popped the head off and got it superficially clean. Nowhere near clean enough of course.

Actually some blue paint under the mung

Can still see the crosshatch in the holes so that's a good sign. Probably hard to see.

I have zero interest in climbing underneath today. Think I'm gonna raid the cardboard bin tonight so I can cover the floor, and then give the block a good scraping before I take the pan off.
The dishwasher should make that blue colour just "Pop"!!!
Timing is everything with that step though... just saying'.

Sometimes I think it’d be worth having an old dishwasher in the shop. Have it all drain into a 40 gal drum and let the water evaporate… ;) of course.

I dunno, that cross hatching looks a little too tired. I guess I could trade you a low mileage 2H for that though... 🤣🤣🤣

I bet you logged into the interweb this morning, foolishly thinking you'd seen the world's most ghetto valve spring compressor.

I briefly considered making more of a proper one, but this will allow all the pieces to go back into the scrap bin to be something else.

Worked to get them apart so I can continue to clean, but something a bit more civilized might be nice for reassembly.

Works because that's a slab of steel that's 2 1/4" x 10" x 48" the head is laying on.

Got it from my old creepy neighbour, he even had it milled flat.

Wasn't worried about tipping it over...I think it weighs about 400 pounds.

And viola. More stuff for the memory game table.

Poked the valves out and yep, it's nasty in there. I might need to up my chemical game to get that s*** clean.

That's about it for today, just wanted to see if the contraption I cobbled together at 2am would work.

Breakfast and nap time now.

Much less ghetto than a busted spark plug, a brazed in compressor fitting, and the pickle fork I used the last time. :D

Cleaning valves seemed the kindof s***ty job a guy should be paid to do.

Degreaser then descaler seemed to work. Doing the head should be a treat. :bang:

Thinking of hanging it into a 5 gallon pail of this s*** because I don't have any trays it'll fit in.

Thought this was interesting...

PXL_20210613_034223472.jpg

Were definitely a few where the buildup was interfering with the sealing area, so it needed doing.

They are goopy! Sounds like you need more turbo to keep those valves hotter and burn a little more fuel.

Haha, nah truck goes well enough. Not going to crank up the boost to 20psi or anything like that. If I wanted a sports car I'd buy one.

30+ years of the vent going to the intake is probably most of it.

I'll run it under the truck when all this goes back together.

Curious to see if the intake dries out after that or if it still gets oily from the turbo.

Hopefully a new turbo will be sooner than later.

I had some hints it was oily before...

There’s gotta be someone in Nanaimo with an ultrasonic cleaner that’ll run it through for $50 or so. Beer?!…
Ha, there's one upstairs in the department where they sterilize the operating equipment. I probably shouldn't

Was thinking I'd give it a go with the chemicals I have and see how time consuming it'd be.

If it looks like it's going to suck too hard, I'll take it to one of the engine shops for a dunking.

Peered inside when I got home. It's actually not that bad. I don't see it taking that much of a scrub.

#1 has a pretty good turd nugget but other than that :meh:

Yeah I was just going to reuse the old ones.
Never would have guessed. Hahahahaha

Seriously though, looks good. I saw all the same stuff in the three sd22 nissan diesels I took apart, albeit you have more sludge in there. I bet it relates to the lack of a stink pipe to atmosphere. Catch can and a new hamster wheel should cut down a lot on that stuff.

Also, frogs must be awake by now.

They are awake. I suspect the few days after the weather changes will be prime time. I'm officially off til the 25th now.

Just sayin' ;)

I'm not concerned about the sludge. After 30+ years I'd be surprised if it was clean.

Can't imagine it'll have to go another 30 years. Probably have to special order diesel by the ounce with hazardous materials paperwork filled out by then.

Convert it to run on vegetable oil or..,

Nah. Watched enough hippy scientists mess with that s*** thinking they were smarter than everyone else and saving the world.

Doubt it'd matter what it burned, just that it burns it.

I guess you’re going to accept the inevitable. ;)

One of my dogs likes to hump my leg.

I find it's best not to encourage it.

Don't know why I'm reminded of that. :flipoff2:

Did a little more cleaning. #1 with the turd nugget was actually the only one with any appreciable build up to scrape out. The rest were pretty much just stained. So cleaning up is no big deal.

Think I'll grab some blue engine paint tho before I'm done. Maybe the muck won't stick as well.

Looks like ford tractor blue to me. I'm going to assume that will be easier to find than Toyota 12ht blue

Did a little experiment with this super high tech tool just because I don't feel like really getting into it today.

Seems pretty straight forward.

And now as we're both officially on vacation, swmbo has demanded we go to the pub.

Bummer. 😁

deja vu? My 12HT Rebuild Journey... - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/my-12ht-rebuild-journey.1255276/ :meh:

Looking good Ryan. Every old Toyota motor I've had apart has a sludged/coked up intake manifold and head intake ports. Sludge from crank case vent, some coked up if they have EGR. Makes for a nasty mix. PITA to clean, but worth the effort. The EGR mix is usually what is hardest to clean, so you're lucky you don't have to deal with that.

Your motor is looking pretty good so far in terms of wear though!

Looks like your intake ports have a bit of a swirl design to them? That's cool!
