Hmmm Sounds like we need to have a HIHX Chili Cook Off on pot luck night. You guys can settle it once and for all!

New to the whole trail experience, but I am not sure I would want chili in the stomach out on the trail..lol

It won't be in your stomach long though. Chili for dinner usually means a completely empty gastrointestinal system by 7am the following morning for me....TMI :)

You must be having the "chili" with beans in it.

Team no beans.

A chili with beans is not a chili at all.

But wait you're from Louisiana so if you add rice isn't that almost just gumbo??

We tried adding other adventures as options a few years ago. River rafting trip in Durango, Silverton/Durango train rides, mine tours, guided hikes, fly fishing, 14er climbs, and mountain biking trails. They all flopped. Mountain biking Telluride mountain is the only one that had any traction.

Handies is one of the better climbs in the state. The flowers are bananas. Climbing a 14er is a daunting task even for healthy folks, but very very doable. It's important to start early. Leaving camp before 5am would be best. You definitely want to be off the summit before noon. Folks are killed every year from lightning here in Colorado. I can't tell you how many times we've been descending after summiting and a group in jeans and sneakers are just starting their climb with storm clouds building all around. Storms pop up fast almost every day above 13,000 feet.

My girls climbed their first 14er when they were 8. If your kids are up for it, it's a fantastic thing to do as a family. Little legs take twice as many steps as big legs, so plan for at least an extra two+ hours with kids. Stop often and always have sugary snacks and plenty of water available to keep them going.

I guess if you want to spell chile wrong you can have it. NM has the best green chile. Colorado has the best green chili. But now you're fighting with Texas over the best chili and then we start arguing over beans or no beans. It's going to get messy fast. Let's have an official chile/chili eating experience at HIHX and then we can vote on it. I'll bring some of the best green chile for people to use as a garnish on nearly everything and you can bring a giant pot of green chili. Anyone from Texas want to bring some Texas Chili?

No beans. Much better without beans and I'm not a native Texan.

Then, you have the term "chili con carne," which would imply that the essence of chili is the beans and that the meat is an add-on.

But, I'm from the Pacific Northwest, so I know more about chilly than either chili or chile. :meh:

I didn’t know there was such a thing as chili without beans o_O

Do not fear the bean or the heat, there are some outhouses dispersed around the trail system.

And if we are lucky enough that Nitro (JT) will again sponsor the high octane coffee for early risers at Kendal mountain, that should pretty ensure your “trail ready” by meet up time. 😎

I say (I say) Bring on the NM vs TX vs CO Chili challenge. In fact I suspect theres competent representation from the vast regions HIH draws in.

Who actually has the best chili recipie- Midwest? East? South? South West? West????

B R I N G - I T !

Just to add a bit, there are multiple routes up Handies, and it is the east slope / Grizzly Gulch route that is considered the most scenic, though a bit longer than from American Basin. 14ers.com • Home of Colorado's Fourteeners and High Peaks is the central repository for Colorado 14er information - surely one of the finest websites in the history of the internet.

Yup! Clear and sunny skies turn to pouring BIG rain and lightning (with hail sometimes) in about 15 minutes or less. Heck, the temps drop fast too. Handies would be a good candidate depending on how many people would want to do it. Would get to see lots of marmots and chipmunks along the way :) Good hiking shoes and poles along with a LOT of water, small first aid kit and sunscreen are musts for summiting 14ers.

I remember summiting Princeton the first time in 1987. About 20 of us ODP players were at the top with our coaches when a HUGE lightning strike hit Shavano (2 peaks over...no more than 4 miles from us). Scared the heck out of all of us and our coach had us scurry down the mountain post haste. We hadn't even reached tree line when the storm blew in fierce and we were all soaked to the bone with cold rain. And when I say were scurrying, I mean hauling butt. We were all in exceptional physical condition and it took everything we had to get off that peak in less than 15 minutes. Never want to relive that again.

Sounds like HIHX is shaping up to have an EPIC chili cookoff and a potential 14er on the docket :)

Arguing about chili and chile is way better than arguing about radios and politics. And now Kelly Saad has raised the bar to pizza and I happen to know someone @paflytyer who is rather opinionated about pizza.
