Wrong event. HIH isn't about what you have on your 100. We've had fully stock daily-drivers at HIH. You don't need anything except a CB and a willingness to have a good time. You'll fit right in. To be honest, we like seeing the stock/super mild builds. See you in Silverton.

It is pretty funny seeing people like me who have basically lit money on fire building this truck next to a high mile, sagging spring 100 doing all the same stuff. With the exception of one trail up there and a couple fun lines, there’s nothing a stock truck won’t do. Come for the views, roll on a good set of AT tires, and it’ll do just fine.

Yeah. But where’s the fun in dodging and going around all the harder obstacles because you have crappy stock bumpers that will get damaged if you wanted to try them, or if you’re a noob and just happened to choose a bad line, those stock bumpers don’t hold up very well. And the running board delete mod is a must for this event unless you like to play with fire or constantly worry about hitting them.

Clear Lake, Alpine Loop, Black Bear, and Immogene. That would make for a nice HIH itinerary, and they all should be no problem with just AT tires. :p
Edit: I am not a dodger BTW. So I guess I do agree with that.

Clear Lake is a great intro trail.
We did it by accident on our first day at HIH8 right after registration. We put up our tents and had some time to kill, didn’t research any trails before the event, saw Clear Lake on the map nearby and went up there to do some fishing.

Good to hear, as our build/prep is intended as more of a father/son project, to make the new to us, old high mileage vehicle comfortable, and reliable enough to make the ~2200mi round trip a little less interesting/exciting/stressful.
In 2016, I bought another 100, a stock '04LX, pulled the running boards and installed AT tires, then drove it across the county five days later for HIH6. Just catch the maintenance up.

It sounds like yours, was acquired in much better shape than this one was. The 180 mile drive home, from purchasing our 99, was exciting (not in a good way) due to the condition of the CVs, brakes, ball joints, AHC, diff bushings, rack bushings, etc. While we could just hop into either our 00 LC or 06 LX today, and make the trip just fine, HIHX is an excuse for us to accelerate fixing up our old 99, to make it road worthy.

Our planned list of "off road mods" are pretty much limited to:
CB radio (may throw a ham radio in as well)
285/75R16 tires
Pull the 1 remaining mud flap and re-securing the rear bumper
Replace the factory steps with a set of sliders
Replace the dead/dying AHC, with a mild Tough Dog lift (so I don't get sea sick)
Bolt some recovery points on the front, and stick one in the rear hitch.
May try to bolt an old winch onto a hidden winch mount behind the OE bumper

From what I'm hearing, even some of this might be considered excessive.

If we give the OE bumpers a little more "character" during the trip, so be it. It's not like they're pristine now.
Everything else will be just fixing worn/broken items, or maintenance items.

Are sliders a must or just recommended?

I did everything I could find the last two years to get bumper damage...never hit them once. Both stock and with a lift. You need zero modifications to run even the hard trails at HIH. Have good tires, take off the running boards and roll. You may need to be a little picky about your lines, but not as much as you think. I followed an 80 on 37’s and took his line on 99% of the stuff we did that day. Know your vehicle and limits...which are farther than a lot of people think. ATRAC works when you let it do it’s thing!

You’ve all just witnessed a boy become a man. ;)

You didn’t try hard enough because I scuffed my front bumper in several spots and same with the rear bumper.

I think @aaronrules should take off his receiver hitch and give it a try this year

I can provide pics if people are interested. When I say scuffed I mean I messed them up pretty good. Front bumper even crumpled on the side, I bend it back as much as possible but there’s still a good crease in the plastic. I hit my sliders several times also! But then again I wasn’t trying to go around the bigger rocks. I didn’t drive out over a thousand miles to dodge obstacles on a 4X4 trip. You’ve all been warned hahaha!

Well, I do know you were following @bluecruiser when this went down, and you were just a gnats hair away from having a real bad day...

Yeah that damn thing “saved” my rear bumper a few times. UGH....maybe I’ll hit the corners this year! Or maybe THIS IS MY YEAR TO WIN THE RAFFLE!!!

Also, for the past 3 years? We have crowd funded a thank you gift for Chris and Stan. This year we may try to expand the thank you’s to some key volunteers that Chris and Stan rely on. This is all very preliminary, but at the very least those that want to contribute to the cause, you can get a hold of me on here via PM or on

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronlthorne

I'm on Instagram as aaronrules. Instagram

Just send me a message and I’ll let you know the details.

EDIT: This is just a group of us who are thankful for having such an awesome event to go to. Chris, Stan and company do not have anything to do with this. The gift they receive will be a secret.
