Having owned and currently owning a few Rovers, when it comes to wheeling,the Discovery 1 and even 2 are extremely capable right out of the box with a great aftermarket to make them dam near unstopable, on a platform that can get you to the trail in comfort. I've wheeled my Disco all over the country.

I'm a former 1995 Land Rover Discovery owner. I bought it used in 1997 with about 25K miles on it and sold it last year, so I owned it for 8 years. I would agree that the Discovery was extremely capable right out of the box, has great aftermarket support, and was very well designed. With some relatively minor modifications, it can go just about anywhere you want in comfort.
However, the quality control absolutely sucked. Most of the problems were little things like rattles - mostly stuff that won't leave you stranded somewhere - and were eventually fixed before the warranty expired. When I sold my Land Rover last year, I passed along copies of all the service records - it was a pretty thick pile of paper for all the things that got fixed over the years, many of which never should have been an issue.
I've said it a number of times before and will say it again - if Land Rover could approach the level of quality control that Toyota/Lexus is known for and keep their prices in the same ballpark they're in now they would have a killer product. In fact, if they could get their quality control up to a high level, they might even be able to reduce their prices given all they spend on fixing problems now.
I really liked my Land Rover a lot, but won't consider buying one again unless they get their act together in the quality control.
