We just moved from Newport Beach, CA where land cruisers usually only cruise the mall to 20 minutes away from Rubicon.

A little bit of a change.

I've always been a landcruiser fan and we are looking at getting something we can go out in as a family yet still go out and hit the trails. We're talking level 3 type offroading max.

Where do I start researching if a 100 series is up to the task without huge modifications?

Noob question but do any of them have rear lockers?

Another Shotts plant?

try the seach.

Sure I'll take a Shotts vehicle! ;)

I'm checking out his site right now. VERY informative.

It depends on want you want to do? Size of the family etc? Also you stated stock; what do you mean by near stock?

You may want a 100...or an 80 is more your speed.. lettuce know:)

Oh and welcome to mud newbie...:flipoff2:

There is 4 of us so not a huge family.

I don't mind doing a lift, tires, replacing the running boards and so on but that's about it.

It would also be a second vehicle and my work vehicle so it would need to be reliable and somewhat comfortable which isn't a problem with many of the LC's.

Yep

The car that needs to go and will be replaced by a LC, an FJ or a Disco.

Probably a LC though.

We had a SAAB that was painted Imola Red. I think Imola is a famous old race course in Italy (and the SAAB is Swedish, go figure...).

My two cents, stay away from the Disco! We have two young kids, two dogs, we pull a boat and try to get off road as often as we can (but not near enough). I think the LC can't be beat. Our is new so I don't have the sage experience that most here do, but every day I drive it I fall deeper in love with it. We also like having the room and size of the cruiser - including towing capacity. Of course, if you don't need the space, it's arguably not worth paying for (in initial price and gas milage). But the Cruiser is bad ass, bottom line!

I had 2 friends with a Discos and both said it was a huge mistake, I would also say stay away. But if you don't need a lot of space a 4runner is also a good option. However I love my 99' LC and I have 98k miles on it now. I don't know anyone personaly that has a LC that isn't happy both 80 and 100 owners. just my 2 cents

If your emphasis is on off-roading...particularly if you want/need 4"-6" of lift...hard for me to say since my 100 works so well for my off-road travels...but the 80 I think would be the choice. Otherwise get a 100...you won't be unhappy!

Can't wait to hear from the peanut gallery on the above opinion :D

If you plan on running level "3" trails at best, The 100 would be perfect for you and your family.

It will get you to the trail, run the trail without beating the family up inside the cab, and get you safely home with no drama...while carrying everything but the kitchen sink( in fact go ahead and bring the sink..why not?).

As far as lockers go, I guess it depends on who you ask as far as "needing" them especially with the mild wheeling you plan on doing. IMHO I think a 2000-up model with traction control would better suit your needs. :)

And yes...I AM biased ! ;)

Everyone always seems to have a FRIEND who has had a Disco that was a nightmare... I wouldn't put too much stock into second hand Land Rover experiences on a Land Cruiser forum. However...

Having owned and currently owning a few Rovers, when it comes to wheeling, the Discovery 1 and even 2 are extremely capable right out of the box with a great aftermarket to make them dam near unstopable, on a platform that can get you to the trail in comfort. I've wheeled my Disco all over the country. From Moab, to Uhwarrie, to the Rubicon, to New England, to 21 Road, driveing from NJ, and there hasn't been much to stop my truck with smart driving, a rear locker, and 32's. And perhaps I'm the rare exception, but truck has never left me stranded or been in any way a nightmare. In fact, it's been the most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. Sure it has sunroofs that rattle, a self lubricating chassis, and ample driveline slop(which I'm convinced it is those loose tolerances that get you to and from your destination), and it has never balked at any request I've made to it. Trip after trip, it continues to perform.

This is my first Land Cruiser. It will be put through it's paces. If I can get it to perform at 1/3 of what I've done with the Disco I'll be extremely pleased. I don't see how it can without a flexy sexy suspension life the Disco, but I remain optimistic and have been pleased so far.

Oh, with that said and in complete contradiction, if you are considering the LR3...RUN!!! If you are gonna have a truck with more computers in it than the freakin space shuttle, would you rather have British electronics or Japanese electronics? Think about it...

If you go to a LR board, I'll bet everyone doesn't seem to have a friend who has had a 80 or 100 series LC that was a nightmare...:flipoff2: :D

That's precisely my point. You can go to ANY forum and find someone making broad accusations about something they have absolutely no first hand experience with. It's like saying "I have two friends that are alergic to nuts. I would suggest you stay away from nuts". It's ignorant.

Kneel,

Nice to see they made one right :flipoff2: .
