100 vs LR3

I bought my last car this way. It was an Audi, I spec'd every option I wanted. I had to wait 6 months to get it, but it was "my" car.
An LC setup like that would be pretty sweet.

I can't believe any of us V8 owners could be happy with the 4.2 slug?

Although the V8 may have more power, the 1HD-FTE engine is good for 200 hp and chipped it produces 231 hp, standard torque is 317ft/lb and 381 chipped, so you probably could put up with that I expect, it will be interesting if they bring out the 4.4 litre 299hp 440ft/lb engine in 2007/08 as rumoured

I wouldn't take the TD IN A UZJ100 if it had 1000HP. The 100 is too good a ride...too smooth...and too quiet to trash it. I'll throw that TD into my LX450 in a heartbeat!

I agree with Shotts... I love the gasoline V8 in the 100. IMHO its the best damn engien ever built. Its so over engineered it should last as long as a TD and I don't have to hunt around for stations to fill up. Were I under stand the allure of a TD engine (ie a "real truck engine"), the V8 in the 100 is smoother, more powerfull and equally reliable. For me (i don't have need to tow anything) the v8 has plenty of power, no need for chiping it or anything else.

Yes I can understand your love for the gas guzzlers, and I know they are smooth, but amazingly the 1HD-FTE is extremely smooth and doesn't have that chunky rattle of a truck engine, and I expect you would be suprised if you drove one. I wonder if and when NA are going to allow more diesels into the market and supply diesel at more gas stations. Where is diesel available, mainly at truck stops on the highways?

Yeah give me a deisel with about 400hp and 600 ft-lbs torque.
That gets 20-22 mpg.
Then I'd happy as hell.

Diesel fuel is available at just about any gas station here. I think the problem we mostly face is the strict emissions laws.

Hello,

I have been lurking in this forum for awhile.
My BJ60 (3B Diesel and 5 speed) was recently stolen and am looking to replace it.

I have been considering the 80 and 100 series.
I think I am going to go for a diesel 80 series imported from Japan.

I have driven one, and I must say they are quite and smooth, and VERY powerful. In fact the engine even comes down tuned from Japan for power restrictions. Once you adjust the timing (they come about 2 degrees retarded.) they produce about another 15-20%.

Compared to my friends 2004 VW TDI, the 1HDT is smoother and quiter.
I think everyone owes it to themselves to drive one (if they can.) Anyone can come drive mine when I get it.

I have never driven the 100 so I can't compare. I am sure it has lots of power, but I really liked the diesel in the 80. Plus it gets around 22-24 US mpg when tuned right.

Its hard to compare gas to diesel. Gas is always faster, but diesel pulls way harder. Also in Canada diesel is usually cheaper to buy, plus it gets almost double the millage. And typically speaking the diesel will keep running long after. I don't know much about the V8 in the 100, but it sounds very reliable. There are pro's and con's to both, but personally I like diesel. If you want more power you can add a intercooler and propane injection. Then you would be getting CRAZY power.

Getting diesel in Canada is a piece of cake. 95% of stations carry it.

Anyways, that is my two bits.
Cheers,
Nick

I would also like to see a 5 speed option.
They have them overseas for both the 80 and the 100.
I wonder why they don't bring them here.
Or atleast give the option to custom order it.

Having an 80 and a 100 is ideal. I agree with the folks about optioning out a new rig. That would be the best way to go.

If they offered a diesel in the 100 I would buy it in a heartbeat. I think the Diesel vs. Gas was compared here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=53091&page=2&highlight=comparison and the diesel was determined to be the much better option* . Some people are still stuck in the stoneage and are clinging to their petrol powered vehicles because it's all they have ever known ;)

*may or may not be the better option depending on your opinion, opinion may vary :D

overall, this sums it up best:

Well of course you would never have a diesel in your UZJ100, because it would become an HDJ100. :D

Seriously have you ever driven a 4.2L Equiped toyota? I think if you did you would be amazed. I drove a 1990 version, not even the most recent version, and it was AMAZINGLY quiet. I could not believe it even myself. I'm sure others with this engine can attest to this fact. I do not believe it would wreck the driveability of the 100 at all, and the Magazine article in the link I posted earlier certainly seemed to love the diesel and liked it more than the gasser.

The Cruiser gets scoffed with the power it has now, think about if it had less, or they went back to a diesel and a slower vehicle, it would be a huge mistake for Toyota to make...atleast in the US. Now to make it available via special order, that's a different issue, and I think that's what Toyota should do, make many of these options available via special order only, so the dealerships still carry their normal alotment of luxo ones, but you could order almost anything, would take several months to get, etc..that's fine, but make it available.

I agree the diesel should be an option, not a replacement for the gasser. But the diesel is not a less powerful vehicle. It makes more torque than the 4.7L V8.

That article you are highlighting concluded that the V8 was the better choice over the TD.
The TD costs $12,000 more than the V8.

I would love a TD but the price of entry is hard to swallow...

I agree, if you want to tow heavy, throw that extra $12000 into a used Dodge 1 ton with a Cummins Turbo diesel :) Now you can tow anything you want.

I talked to Toyota USA Customer Service Manager many years ago. I asked very profesionally why Toyota did not put manual transmissions in their Land Cruisers. He looks in the computer, talks to a few people (didn't put me on hold either, was on the other line). He comes back to me on the phone and says (sic):

``Sir, our records indicate that almost 100% of Land Cruiser sales are all automatics; it looks clear from the sales figures that our customers are demanding automatics.''

I replied (again nicely) with something like ``let me guess, exactly 100% of units sold since 1988 were automatics!'' I infomed him that that transmission options in LCs were a) automatics or b) automatics; sales figures without alternatives will prove anything you want.

Very humorous exhange, but I really don't think Toyota USA cares about this option for us. It's cheaper to source parts and service for a single transmission since that will be the majority of sales. Book closed in Toyota USA's eyes.

That's exactly right Aus4x4 concluded that "off the shelf" the V8 was the one to have and that's in Australia! The article not only gave the V8 the nod but it did it even under conditions of unleaded being more costly than diesel which is obviously not the case here in the states! Personally I think they are both good engines but I'm satisfied with the gasser. I missed how this applies to the LR3 comparo though. :flamingo: I think the TD or the V8 would both have no problems pulling the LR3 back to the nearest dealer for repair. :flipoff2:

The range for the gas V8 w/o the optional fuel tank is really pretty pitiful. I wish we could get those tanks here. I can go twice as far w/o fueling in my Camry as the LC.

Never had a problem running low on gas.

Agreed. I'm sure you know already but Manefre sells the OEM sub tanks every once in awhile. ARB also makes some auxilary fuel tanks. Pricey they are.
