Hearing about this happening, mostly with 1998-2002 models. Is this still a problem with later models? I have an '04 and sometimes am deep in the North Woods of Maine and wondering if I should a spare and tools on board. Thx

For the life of me I don't see it in the FAQ listings.

Looks like it got moved, it's back. As for the year, the "improved" rod isn't a superseded part number, so not way of knowing if there was MY change and it was introduced. For it leaving you stranded and not involving carrying a lot more tools/parts, if I were super remote, I'd have one.

main thing is to not have any force needed to turn the key
if the key doesn't turn easily, pull on the steering wheel, left or right to take the pressure off the steering lock

the rod breaks when extra force is needed to rotate the key to start the engine.
208,000+ miles on my wife's daily driver and no issues
