Yeah, I've seen a lot of those threads too, but the thread that seems to have the most comprehensive, logical approach to the "likelihood" of having a transmission failure (to wit: https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/501772-2000-trans-status-2011-update.html) states that 65% of the known (on MUD) failures have occurred in model year 2000. The other 45% of failures have occurred in MY's 1999, 2001, and 2002. Basically, there appears to be about a 3.7% chance of a failure in a 2000, while the other years are lower than that...........and, virtually all occur without warning (sound of knocking on wood for me, smm3, papalud, and euclid)

I am gonna stay out of this debate as much as possible as I feel it is blown out of proportion. My 2000 has 174K on the original transmission. I would like to think that the reason the numbers are higher on the Mud forum is because they get reported here. Not nearly as many people report that their transmissions are functioning as they should outside of the forum. All we know is the limited amount of people that have had failures....

Would that scare me from buying another 2000? Nope.

I didn't buy an 1998-99 because of the weak 2 pinion up front. I think all trucks that are 12-14 years old or older can have problems. You can rationalize everything if you so choose.

Looks good. Mine rode much better after the lift as well but it could have ridden just as well with new OEM shocks and springs...I just didn't go that route.

yeah given the fact I could redo factory or lift for a little more, it's a no brainer.

Also, a high high majority of people that have this problem end up on mud. The 98% of folks with no problems never sit down and google "2000 landcruiser transmission"

the key to me is remembering what ya'll are pointing out. We HEAR about virtually all of the failures bc people come here looking for answers, price quotes for comparison, etc. what we dont hear about is the 98% happily racking up miles and driving around.

I have learned that if you WANT to work on your truck or be paranoid about maintenance you can work yourself into a frenzy with MUD. Taking each thread with a grain of salt and some sanity for the fact we are all fanatics and ubber senstive to our rigs helps me realize that ALOT of what fills mud is useful knowledge but unnecessary .(ie tb changes at 90k instead of maybe 120, oil changes with oil x over oil y will give you 50 horesepower, or unless you choose THIS tire your whole family will die in a quintuple roll over bc you have a lift and a tire blew bc you didn't listen to the cruiser gods)

it's all relative.

totally agree....

wait my diff is gonna fail? (furiously searching FAQ:grinpimp:)

to compliment Nolan's point, mud is probably home to nearly every "hard" used 100 series in the US. By that i mean if you cross a 100 series on a dirt track in western montana while you are out wheeling, odds are he has been on mud. whereas i am sure there is a much lower chance that the prisitne 100 series you see at the soccer field in madison on a sunday afternoon is on here. By that i mean, the mud users really put some of these trucks through the paces so i am sure their failure rate is a lot higher than a mall mom with 200K miles.

Ha Ha. I bet you drive home as a 2wd cruiser just like I did, oh so many years ago. But the silver lining is you get to upgrade to an ARB when that happens.
Are you factory locked in the rear?

^ I won't wheel that hard...this is my DD...no CDL only

Welcome Nick. Lots of regurgitation here from the main forum but entertaining just the same....

Hey Nick. Good forum here, and these guys have helped me a lot with my 40.

You should make the road trip up to the event they put on, SCC, mid October...they give away free ARB fridges to the new people :)

I'll give it a shot :) . 100 Tech section is great, but it's the same guys and same topics. This one doesn't seem to be much different but you don't have to worry about it getting deleted or whatever. I honestly can't wait for this 100 Series drive outwest, I'm saving my pennies for the gas out there, hell it could be $6 a gallon.

question...I put my door into a rock this past weekend, replace or keep as battle scar?

welcome (pic shamelessly pilferred)

thanks, with all the replies it has to be good! I was searching for "bedlining" and this thread came up on my phone. I am getting ready to bedline the 100, however something is just bothering me when I say "bedliner" and "100 series" in the same sentence. I have seen 60's and 80's bedlined and they look outstanding. But I just can't see a 100 looking awesome in bedliner. Despite the dents and scrapes I have, I still like the shiny normal paint. However I'm not apposed to desert tan bedliner.

I'm so confused on what I should do....ideas? thoughts?

Nick

not true. I found mud and THEN found a cruiser and then YALL had problems....

I googled something to do with land cruisers and the club site came up and took me to mud........and then 2800 post, 2 accounts, and 2 cruisers later here we are:D

I think what loud and spresso did look great, however considering my paint condition and how I wheel it won't be getting any better nor slowing down.

I found mud back in 06. I can't remember what I was looking for but I came across it and was just blown away with the potential for these trucks. I was hooked, I lurked for a few years and finally joined in 08. Great site.

^ ok well you do it to your truck first and then I 'll follow your directions:p
