HALP!

Looking into replacing my brakes and was initially leaning towards R1 concepts. Naturally, there's a lot of conflicting sentiment towards them.
So, I'm wondering if I should just keep things simple and stick with OEM calipers, rotors, pads, brake drum, & (aftermarket) SS brake lines - the whole schebang.

My truck is my daily driver and I've been taking it out for casual offroading but don't want to push it too much in its current state.

Would love to hear what folks here are running.
 
Getting my suspension rebuilt later in the year - should I just get the custom length brake hoses replaced then?
Most likely 2.5" lift.

Trying to get everything done in sequential order to keep the labor as cost-effective as possible.
So - alignment, spacers + new wheels, & brake system install all at the same time.
 
You need to check, but think SS hose kits have the extra length.
Of the 6 hoses only two of the rear (frame to axle) need to be longer. Unless its a 98 or 99 then only one hose.
 
If you don't find that your OEM brakes are lacking in terms of emergency performance, I'm not sure why you'd consider getting non-OEM. The rotors and pads last a very long time and are quite good.

Whatever pads you choose to go with, if you stick with the stock front brake calipers, ensure you get the Mr. T shim kit for installation. It makes installation a breeze and is so much better than the Duralast (crap) you get from an Autozone or equivalent.
 
I've had very good luck with OEM pads and calipers with drilled rotors. They clear better when they get wet and dont overheat or warp like the stock rotors did.

The service history was good (I purchased it in July '20), but come to find out - it wasn't being driven regularly for several years. It was regularly parked close to the ocean so, it's a little on the creaky side of things. Brake drum is gross, pads and hoses definitely need to be replaced, and rotors need to be resurfaced.

I'm totally fine with OEM, but seeing some folks out there that really swear by Power Stop or R1. Just putting feelers out there and obsessively editing my spreadsheet as I weigh out different options as I get le hundy to baseline. Thanks for the rec, I'll look into those options!
 
I have a heavy rig with all the add-ons. Very happy with Hawk LTS pads, SS lines and the rest OEM.
Where did you source your Hawks & SS lines @Skidoo ? Did you see appreciable performance with the upgrades?
 
I switched to StopTech slotted rotors (which is what I use on my track car) and their street pads and the braking was improved more than I expected. It was about $250 per axle for the pads and rotors.

My perception of the stock performance may have been from below-spec performance of the stock system. I found the PO had made some mistakes in the previous hub assembly and the hub bearings were loose. This could have caused the mushy, unpredictable feeling that prompted the brake job.

Nonetheless, even though I have not used the brakes hard enough to engage the ABS yet, I have surprised myself with the slow-down violence a couple of times.

BTW I have almost new stock rotors and pads if anyone local to Houston wants them. :rolleyes:

Where did you source your Hawks & SS lines @Skidoo ? Did you see appreciable performance with the upgrades?
I got the Hawks at AutoAnything, they have sales all the time, I watched for a sale on them. They are going for $225 for all 4 corners now. I have on my second set and get over 50,000 miles on them. Like them better than the stock pads, more stopping power. I did have the rotors turned for the first set. I don't remember where I got the SS lines, think they are Goodridge, but could be Slee's. SS made for noticeable better pedal feel.
 
Toyota OEM, I have gotten 60k miles out of them easily and they stop on a dime. What more can you want, fancy slots in your rotors? They are expensive as you should also replace all the parts and pieces to go with it but you get what you pay for...you can buy something half the price and get half the life.

Exactly the combination I am running on both my 80 and my wife's Hundy.
