100 series 1hz air filter upgrade question

hi guys
im from western Australia
just brought a 4x4 after not owning one for about 10 years and now have a dualcab 105 in the garage (well sortof it wont fit)
quick question I remember seein on here somewhere that you can use a larger air filter in the std housing I think the larger one was from a 1ht but I cant find the thread can someone confirm this and maybe post the part no

I think a better way would be to add a prefilter to a snorkle.
I also thought they all used the same sized filter

Im also a firm believer in the normal size to do its job properly for long periods.
i bought a 95 troopy a few months back and havent really had the time to do much with but yesterday I realised it was a few thousand klms overdue for an oil change.
I also decided to do the airfilter and to my horror discovered the filter had 20/6/2009 and 194000klms written on it,which means its done 26000klms and 3 and half years with the same filter.
However an inspection of the air intake to the engine showed it was spotless and no visble dust had gotten past the filter.
Not bad for a vehicle thats been in Paraburdoo most of its life.


The only other filtration improvement I can think of is to use the filtration out of the newer models that have the large square type filter,but that would mean a new canister.

The factory turbo 1HDFTE/petrol filter is about 25mm larger diameter, and is about the same price genuine. Fits the same airbox.
Do I really need to get the part number?

gday fergy i would look at a k&n air filter they are washable and from what i understand they work somewhat better than the standrd airfilter and lifespan if looked after will last as long as you have the car you. what other mods do you have on your toy?

not to sure about washable filters im sure they might flow better but I don't see how they filter better dusting an engine is the last thing I want to do (do remember seein a study somewhere and the amount of particales let through by the washable filter was way high compared to paper type filters?

as for mods its had the back cut off (laingley conversion)
about a 2" lift proper with correction bushes
ARB bar I think
35" tyres
and about to get a snorkel and a set of fergy sliders

Sounds like a nice rig mate I have done quite a lot of research into stuff to do to my 1hz turboed engine it has been bored and stroked so its a 4.5 lt abouts 3 inch exhaust with air to water intercooler 2 inch life with 33"s under it. Pretty much set to travel tomorrow if wanted. From any perspective washable filters are good if looked after right same as standard filters. I don't if there is any comparison on different filters I haven't seen any. I have also been looking into a system called VTES its from what I understand a turbo for your air intake to make a more environment friendly burn but waiting on reply from the company on it.

That's very interesting and still gives us no real clear result just proves that k&n aren't designed for off road and lots of dust haha like everything they have there strong point and weak point. I will surely be looking into more info on air intakes and filters and I wonder if having a twin filter kind of set up would help not that I have room for it under my bonnet

Hey fergy just re read that link you sent to check i read it right i was pretty knackered last night and to me it doesnt give enough answers to whats better and i was also looking on the net just now at donaldsons website and they may have a good filters its hard to say cuz like all brands they make theirs sound best

Good name brand paper filters are the best for dusty conditions. K&n, foam filters and all the rest only increase flow (hp) by increasing the size of the holes the air goes through. For the same size filter and same number of material pleats this is the only way to increase flow. So if you want to increase flow with the same filtration ability you need a bigger filter

My LN106 had a Finerfilter (washable filter) in the airbox when I bought it. It was a pain to clean and re-oil but I kept running it because of the claimed performance increase.
After a trip across the Tanami and through the Kimberly I went to wash it and found dust in the intake ducting and manifold.... It now resides in the landfill in Kununurra and I use a paper element. I did not notice any difference in performance with a paper element and have not had an issue with dust again... and this truck sees alot of dusty roads.
