It may be that the very best home-made seat frames ever built did not have better metal than you have. I think the bigger factor is design/angulation, and quality of welds. BTB catalogs a nifty seat frame, pricey but has alot of features!!
 
If you can weld, or have it welded, and it's not thin like conduit, no problemo. The trouble comes in fish mouthing the stuff to make a smooth butt weld, if you have any of those. Personally, I'd pick up a stick of square tubing to do it with.
 
I think pipe is measured ID and tube OD. If what you have is 1/2" OD, I think that is too small regardless of wall thickness. If it is 1/2" ID then most likely it is 3/4-7/8" ....still too small, IMHO. I would rather use 1" tube. But its only your ass;)
