07 100 vs 08 200 vs 2014 Highlander

Latest thought is to find the best maintained 100 for sub $20k. My logic is that I can still find a well maintained truck in that price range. The cheaper price tag will help alleviate guilt for wanting more vehicle (100 series) than I need (Highlander). I don't want to compromise on the 4R even though I have always loved it.

For what it's worth I found the communities feedback very helpful. I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy checking in through out the day to see what kind of new suggestions/opinions were getting posted. I think maybe you and I are the only people guilty of wasting their time with irrelevant comments on this thread.

Hey Gulliver, we're neighbors (I'm in Chelmsford) and in a similar boat. I've never considered the 200 as the redesign hasn't won me over. I'm a big fan of both the 80 and the 100. If you think the 100 design is old, take a look at the interior of an 80 lol. Highlander would certainly meet your needs and be easy on the petrol, but far too much $$ in my opinion plus first year model issues.

I've been searching for an '03 - '05 LC on and off last year and I'm finding all of them will have more than 100K miles at your below $20K budget. Also, ALL of them that I looked at had rust in the tail gate latch area, and underbody. So, you may have to consider buying one from a dry state, which of course complicates things.

I have 3 kids under 11 so last year we pulled the trigger on an '11 Ody EX-L for the family vehicle (wife loves it). I have a '98 M3 for my summer driver and an '07 Accord for DD duties (27mpg). I'm still looking for either a '97 LX 450 or '03-'05 LC to replace my Accord and use it for my winter driver and occasional beach overlander. We use the Ody for any road trips and camping as it hauls so much stuff and gets 26 mpg. If this will be your daily driver, consider that you will be filling up every 3-4 days at $80 + a fill up. I think the 100's take premium, while the 80's run on regular. My latest thought is to add the LX 450 as a 4th vehicle, keep the Accord for DD, M3 for fun car, and LX for beach and mountains. Guess it's like buying a mutual fund - diversifying my liabilities. Good luck, let us know what you buy!

It's not a matter of being right vs. being wrong. It's a matter of a tech vs. non-tech discussion. This board is a quality resource for technical issues and questions, but lately there's been a large number of threads that are chit chat in this forum making it difficult and cumbersome to find the information some of us are looking for.

- Someone inquires about the LC, they've seen it and fall in love. They need help on making their buying decisions.
- They buy the truck then have a series of rudimentary questions about their truck.
- Eventually they get the itch to mod out the truck.

So someone who is a newbie eventually becomes a valuable member contributing to the knowledge base of this site. If we never aided new members this site would not exist. It would be a couple of guys sending emails back and forth. Be patient.

Gulliver, 03-05 might be your sweet spot. Good updates over the 2002 and not as pricey as the 06-07. On the 04 keep an eye out for the Multi-Function Display issues.

I would agree with the above, but I also have to side with mcgaskins to some extent. It's not hard to figure out for yourself if something is a good deal or not, especially with the wealth of info already existing. I think many folks are looking for validation in their decision (not confident on their own?), and that some use it as a way to break the ice to enter a new community. Both are fine, but a bit of personal research can go a long way, and your favorite mechanic probably has a better opinion on a given truck than a group of guys biased toward a specific model we all love and abuse. Well, now I've contributed nothing useful.

I understand how forums work. Forums also work well with search, and forums also work well when you post in the correct forum. Guys in the 100 forum it seems like to talk more about what ifs than actual tech, which is fine, but the topics pile up and the real tech get buried.

For example, a couple days ago someone asked if anyone here runs Super Swamper Iroc ND tires on their rig. Very poignant question, and one I was very interested in seeing discussed since I've had Swampers in the past and have considered it again for the 100. But, the moderators moved it out of the tech section! Sure, it's tire related, but the question was specific around the 100 and how it works with the tire. It's frustrating to me and probably many others to see these kind of threads (what should I pay, I want to buy, should I buy, how come these things are expensive, etc.) take off and not get moved to Chit Chat, which they are. These are some similar threads from the last several days which most could have answered easily with a search.

Do questions regarding insurance coverage for additions to your truck fall into the "technical" or "chit-chat" category?

Not sure what to do about the numerous "should I buy this' threads. For awhile there was a giant single thread that they all got lumped in to and people liked that it was all in one place. But then, the tides turned and people hated that it was all in one place. If they'd posted they couldn't tell who was responding to who's question (apparently the quote feature didn't work in that thread [sarcasm]).

So then they all started getting moved to the classifieds per woody, but then the complaints were about "no one looks in the classifieds". Then they disappeared for awhile, but now they're back. I honestly don't think it's so bad that you can't scroll past them, but it would be nice if each buyer kept their search for a truck in one thread rather than starting a thread for each truck they find.

Can a sub-forum be created in the 100-series section to dump all of the buy/sell/best year/model differences/etc. threads in? I personally don't mind the threads, but maybe that's a good way to keep the peace.

There was. Another complaint about it was once it got put into the sticky thread that no one knew they'd originally posted, despite the MOVED redirect that would link them right to their post . . .

You know what happens with these tech forums? Traffic slows down to a crawl where it becomes boring.

Part of the fun is the banter. Part of the satisfaction gained is know how. Good stuff comes out in combo.

I love my 200. My mantra is pretty simple: buy the newest, lowest mileage, best conditioned vehicle you can afford.

I have an LC, 4R and Highlander. They are all significantly different vehicles. I would say that the new Highlander is probably the best choice for all of us for our practical daily driving - it has a unibody design which is safer for the passengers in an accident; it is the best on gas; the hybrids have awesome acceleration and efficiency (my brother didn't have to change brake pads on his until 140k miles). The soccer mom appeal keeps their value high for years to come. You don't have to be an offroader to use the all wheel drive.

The 4R is probably the most fun to drive, but the harshest suspension of the three models. It is also much smaller inside than the late model Highlander. Three adults or car seats in the back are unrealistic for trips longer than a few minutes. Our V8 4R gets 19 mpg highway and 15-16 city on stock style all season tires.

The LC is a beast, handles like a beast and gets beastly gas mileage - albeit very comfortably.

Maintenance and repair costs are similar across the models, with the exception of tires. The 90k service on our Highlander was far more expensive than the V8's. Towing capacity of the Highlander is similar to the newer 4R's. The V8 4R has a higher towing capacity than the LC. The new 4R's cannot tow as much as the old ones.

All in all, I think Toyota found the most sensible compromise in the newest Highlander.

You guys rarely ever post up pics of the all important interior. The highlander 2014 is head and shoulders above the 100 and 4th gen 4r when it comes to ergo and media.
