The Taco has butt loads of power and a great engine note. I am often asked if it has a v8 in it! It shifts smooth and clean, tranny never gets hot. Everything works great including the e-locker. By no means is this a rock crawler or even a serious off-roading truck, rather an overland Taco! I myself have only actually wheeled the truck a few times. Yet, it has proven it's self 2x with 3+ month road trips to Panama and back. Always service by myself or Toyota dealerships. It has a few minor scratches in the paint. Burns zero oil and leaks zero oil.

I bought the Taco in 07, it had 70k miles on it. A compression test was performed and then the TRD S/C was installed. At the same time the timing belt and W/P were done. Brakes on truck are like new, about 12k miles on them, extended braided lines. New nose cone on S/C, recommended by manufacturer at 50k miles. New front CV's and boots. All wheel bearings and seals done about 25k ago. New fan clutch about 25k miles ago. 2 new t-case seals to stop small weeping leaks. A/C serviced regularly and blows ice cold. JVC disc player with iPod hook up with 6-speaker system and remote. Remote starting and alarm system. New lifetime warranty starter about 20k miles ago. Injectors serviced about 12k miles ago. Aux fuel tank is custom tig welded from aluminum and mounts where stock tire mounted. It works as a transfer tank and fills the stock tank via switch on dash & 90gph fuel pump. Range is about 500 miles with the aux fuel tank. Bed of truck is Line-X'ed. The Snugtop bars, rims, ARB bar, sliders and rear bumper are all powder coated silver vein at a cost of over $1,400.

A year and a half ago I set the Taco up for expeditions. A custom sleeping/storage platform was built in the bed. Rear seats were removed and a storage/dog box built. An Engel 45L fridge was installed where the rear seats used to be. The Engel is gone now but I still have the 45L slide tray and it is wired and ready to drop in a fridge. I also still have the stock rear seats, in perfect condition. A 20gal water tank was installed in the bed. Ran via a pump and has a plug in sprayer. This has all been removed but is still available and easily installed. Overhead lighting is installed in the Snugtop and there is a spot light out the back of the truck. I have removed some of the storage bins and sleeping platform from the back of the truck. I only used this and slept in the truck for one long road trip. I have most of the wood from this around still and it could be put back together fairly easily, includes a sliding drawer. Storage bins are lockable.

The Taco just completed over a 10k mile road trip to Panama and back. It performed perfectly and gave me no problems. This is the perfect truck for 1-4 people + dog for long trips into remote places. I have always changed the oil every 3-4k. Trans fluid has been changed at least 2x (possibly 3x would have to check file) in 65k miles. All other fluids are changed regularly. Radiator has a fresh flush and it has a new TRD thermostat in it, both upper & lower rad hoses are new. Brand new TRD spark plugs in it. I have a huge file on this truck with all receipts from day one of purchase. Thousands upon thousands of dollars spent and clearly shown in the file. The Taco has had a compression test performed on it 2x in the last 65k miles and it is A-OK. I am willing to have Toyota perform another one if you want to pay for it. A new throttle body was put on at a cost of $1,000 about 15k miles ago. One of the Cats was new about 25k miles ago, done by Toyota so you know it wasn't cheap!

Expedition gear included:

-Viair portable compressor
-High lift jack with cover & mounts
-20gal water tank with pump & sprayer, wires in place just plug in and go
-Engel 45L slide tray $375
-ARB tire repair kit

-there must be more I am forgetting!

PRICE: $22,500 firm
Trade: $20,000 value or trade + cash equal to $20k

You will be hard pressed to buy and then build a Taco to this same level for that price. This Taco has proven it's self twice with long road trips to Panama and back. So it is expedition ready, I would not hesitate to jump in it right now and drive it to Central America. There is more you can do to this truck such as add a winch, better seats, RTT or leave it as is. Up to you!

What I would really like to do is TRADE this truck for a super clean early to late 90s FJ80 TLC plus cash. I will also consider a built and kitted out "expedition" FJ60 plus cash. I am highly interested in diesel or v8 FJ60/80s with zero rust.

Here is an example of FJ80s I would consider for trade.

Forgot to mention a few things,

-lower ball joints replaced in 06 (iirc) as per Toyota recall
-frame has zero rust
-valves adjusted at 121k miles
-I have a spare stock fuel tank door. The insert you see in the pics for the aux fuel tank filler is also a stock plastic insert. My plan is/was to have the spare door welded on the filler hole for an very clean look.
-Locking lug nuts at all 5 wheels. Both fuel tank caps are locking.

*compression last tested on 11-06-09, results were;
#1 160
#2 165
#3 157
#4 162
#5 165
#6 165

Checking the file on the truck, there are receipts totaling over $24k, not counting the small ones! This means with purchase price of Taco I got over $40k in this truck since 11-2007 when I bought it.

All the Taco really needs is the front seat covers replaced soon, mostly just drivers getting bad. Tires have 10-15k in tread left on them.

I am ONLY INTERESTED in TLCs up to 1997 for trade. Obviously if you want $12k for your TLC I will want your truck and a healthy chunk of change. I can provide anything from the file (receipts) as well as more pictures.

Here are detailed pictures of the Taco as of 4-29-11.

bump for any traders out there....

Tested and proven expedition vehicle here, ready to go to Latin America. Toss your surf boards on it and some fishing gear in the back and drop out!

A few good solid questions from people on other forums or pm's about milage, running the truck on low octane fuel, suspension and so forth....here are my replies.

Milage has always been between 11-16mpg. Usually it is about 14mpg but I have gotten 16mpg or even slightly better if I keep my foot out of it constantly. This was on 95 in Panama and iirc I was getting 16.8mpg for a couple months down there. Here in Wyoming on 91 I usually get about 14-15mpg, less of course if I stomp on it.

It has never ran on regular unleaded since the S/C went on. Most people have the wrong perception of Latin America. Mexico has 91 fuel at the pump. Central America ranges from 91-95. The fuel quality is also not what everyone thinks. It is good quality fuel, Mexico produces it's own. The rest is Chevron, Shell, Exxon, ect ect. Is there crappy fuel in some places down south? Yes, of course but I have never put it in my truck, no roadside jugs, no way run down stations, ect. Is there some long distances down south between fuel ups where super unleaded is available? Yes there is but with the 38gals of fuel I never had to put low octane fuel in my truck, I was always able to make it to a good station that had good quailty super unleaded. Here in Wyoming I run it on 91 which is what we have state wide. The truck has also had top maintenance during and after road trips in Latin America. Such as new plugs, injectors serviced, fuel filter changed, valves adjusted and so forth. The truck has done about 25k miles through Mexico & CA and I have never had a dirty fuel filter, It has been checked a number of times in that 25k miles and changed 2x just for the heck of it. I also never have heard the truck ping. I am anal though so changed lot's of stuff out and do maintenance for prevention. The wheel bearings/seals, alt, starter, rad hoses, brakes, CV's and so forth were not changed out because they failed. Rather new parts went in so this truck would definately not be having any breakdowns in Latin America. Most all that stuff was changed out after 100k miles so should be good now till 200k on the truck, at least.

The S/C gave me a lot of probs in the first 1.5yrs after it went on. Had lot's of engine codes. Which is why it got a new CAT, new o2 sensor, ect. I have not had any codes though in 1.5yrs now and that is with 2 trips to Panama and back, over 25k miles. The known and well documented TB issue on S/C'ed 5vz's started giving me probs within 1st year of S/C the truck. But never acted up much until I got the truck in hot climates. Once in hot climates of Mexico the TB failed. I replaced it with a brand new one. The TB bypass mod is done now as well as a TB spacer. Since the new TB went on and mods done the TB has not given me a single prob, over 15k miles now. I have ran the truck with both the stock S/C pulley and the URD 2.2". For trips to Latin America I have only used the stock pulley to keep boost down. With the stock pulley it runs about 6-7psi boost. With the smaller pulley it runs about 8-9psi boost. I have not ran the small pulley since last year when I only ran it about 2-3 months. So right now the truck has the stock pulley on it. You will notice a sizable amount of difference in power both from elevation changes as well as from pulley size.

Rear suspension on 1st Gen Tacos can be a b*#ch to get dialed in once you start loading these trucks down and setting them up for expeditions. I always hated my stock suspension on this Taco from day one, shocks fade way to much and overall it is just not very responsive, handles like crap too. Many people (myself included) know what the dreaded clunk axle wrap prob is all about on these trucks. Thus began my quest to get it dialed in just right in the rear. I have been through 2 sets of leaf springs and am on my second set of air bags. My first set of leaf springs were just to light duty being an off the shelf Deaver 8-pack. When I bought the truck it came with Airlift air bags. These air bags are junk and caused me alot's of dramas. I ran to Panama and back with this set up and you can be damn sure I knew what needed to be fixed when I got home! I weighed the Taco, both front and rear axle weight too. I told Deaver what I do with this truck and that it had air bags. I sent them specs and they built me new springs. With the new springs and the Firestone air bags the rear suspension is really dialed in well. Before with the Airlifts and 8-pack I had to run at least 70psi in the air bags or I might smack the bump stops a lot. Plus the truck just sagged in the rear unless I had 70psi plus in those bags. With the new Deavers I can load 3 months worth of gear in it and put 20-35psi in the Firestones. It rides excellent set this way and handles well. Even with 19.5gals of fuel behind the rear axle. With no gear in the truck I run around with 5psi in the new air bags. The new Deaver springs are a 2.5" lift but with the air bags the rear ride heigth is adjustable. Having been there now with air bags and done that I can tell you Airlifts are total junk! The Firestones rule and are much beefier with a much better all around design. You can see how much the truck flexes with air bags in it with the pics I posted. Not great but not bad. If you wheeled this truck all the time I would remove the air bags and if you lighten it up (like remove SnugTop) then I have a set of 2.5" 8-pack Deavers ready to go in!! The axle wrap problem has not been an issue and I have not heard that clunk noise since the truck got the new Deavers and Firestones. As far as front suspension, if you add a winch you might go to a #650 or #700 springs. I believe right now it has a #600 spring on the Icons which has probaly settled 1/2" in about 40k miles since they went on. I have ran it both with and without a front sway bar. I like it better with the front sway bar in so right now that is installed. There is an easy mod out there to make the sway bar quick disconnect.

So both the engine and the rear suspension are all dialed in on this truck. That saves anyone building an expedition platform or setting up a S/C'er on a Taco a ton of headaches. The only reason I am thinking of letting this truck go is because I would like to get into something a bit bigger. I also could use a bit of cash for another project of mine. On top of that it would be fun to build up a TLC a bit for my needs over the course of a few years.

bump

I have edited the price above. I am entertaining cash offers more seriously now. I am also flexible as far as overland gear, meaning I am willing to keep most of it and reduce the price a bit.

After a bunch of research on S/C'ed FJ80s, I am not really interested in a S/C'ed TLC.

I am however highly interested in v8 or diesel TLC conversions.

Over 6hrs spent yesterday detailing the truck, updated pictures to come soon.

*Edited the above post to show pictures of the truck as of 4-29-11, here are the rest of them.*

I can't help much, but a free ride to the top of the heap. Give it some time, one will come along.

I spent several hours reading your trip to mex and further last year on expo, great adventure, makes me want to go.

No worries and thanks! I have the truck on ebay with a reserve of $18.5k, I simply can go no lower than that. I am also questioning myself to put it out there at that price!! So much money, time and work invested in this truck....

This is also a super good truck to go farther with. Yeah know, a FWC would be super sweet on it, or how about a flippack!? Not to mention all the mods that you could still do, ie winch, snorkel, SFA swap, front locker, rear full floater conversion and on and on. It is a great truck as is but also has more potential to be built into a cream of the crop overland truck.

$18.5k is the lowest I will go on this truck, end of story. Seeing fairly stock Tacos sell for $15k, well I know that my rock bottem low price is solid. I got time so can wait it out.....

Bump for a sweet rig and Wyoming plates! I now have em on my 60 located near Sheridan/Buffalo
