Well, after I had my mind set on a '05 LX470, I just recently ran across a Black '00 LX with only 92K miles and is a Texas 2 owner Vehicle. The Shadow Mica Gray '05 LX is a Maryland vehicle with 101K miles and was a 1 owner. The Maryland LX looks great and has minimal rust underneath which leads me to believe that is was garage kept. The '00 LX has been in TX its whole life and is in really great shape. Neither vehicle has a carfax that states a timing belt change nor does the engine bay have any stickers. Therefore, either one I purchase will need a timing belt service immediately. Neither vehicle has been in an accident and both have no noticeable glaring maintenance issues. Ok, the '00 is had for $13,900 and the '05 is had for $21900. Thoughts? Advantages/disadvantages to each? This will be my first 100 purchase, and I plan to ultimately convert my rig into a weekend off roader and occasional driver. I have a brand new company SUV, so this will be a "play" vehicle. However, due to my limited knowledge of the 100 series (other than the historic reliability), I need experienced veterans to chime in with advice :) Thanks so much.

An '05 will have the 5 speed transmission versus the 4 speed in the '00, which in my opinion is definitely nice to have especially given how lethargic these trucks can feel as it is.

Additionally, the '05 will have an integrated trailer hitch receiver whereas the '00 will either have an under bumper trailer hitch or no hitch at all. In my opinion, the '05's integrated hitch is a POS because it can't fit most standard 2" hitches (the corners are too rounded in the receiver).

Regardless, both trucks will suit you well. You won't be dealing with VSC/A-TRAC vs. lockers because '00 was the first year VSC/A-TRAC was offered. In my opinion, lockers are really only needed for extreme cases (if you're scaling rocks), A-TRAC is perfectly adequate for most mild-medium offroading.

Drive both and see what you like better. Obviously there's the price difference but if that isn't a concern I'd go with the '05. I'll always say though can't go wrong either way. Enjoy.

Thanks everyone for all of the advice. I recently ended my long tour with the Army, and have always wanted a Landcruiser/LX470. I am leaning toward the '05 simply because it's 5 years newer, and has the 5 speed tranny. It's a clean one owner rig and I plan to keep it a long time. I have now idea what to do once I get it, but will use the search function. I assume timing belt, grease and lube, tune up, and other minor maintenance issues. Any advice would be appreciated and any for sale items that will get my rig to "off-road ready" style would be great :). Thanks!!
