What is the purpose of the fan mounted to the driver's side of the engine bay (directly to the left of the carb) on a FJ60? And how do you operate it? The info is worn off mine.

That would be the carb cooling fan which runs off a heat sensor and, in theory, turns on automatically when the engine gets hot.

Ah. I thought that was what it was, but i couldn't find it on SOR.com. Thanks, Godhead.

only turns on when hot AND when the key is off, so it doesnt ever run when the cruiser is on. Purpose is to keep the carb from getting vapor lock and the fuel to boil off. and to just cool off the stuff.

It turns on when you shut off the vehicle, not when if just gets hot - FYI. Make sure yours is working, or you can expect a carb rebuild. The heat from the manifold will boil out the gas in your carb and screw up your accel pump and other soft parts in there.

To check if it's working, after driving it a while (20+ minutes) in warm weather, when you shut off the engine, you can put your ear up to the vent in the drivers side fender and listen for air being pulled into it. You can raise the hood, too - but the ear test is easy enough.

Before you replace the fan, check the whole system. When I figured out what was wrong with mine, it was a missing sensor by the manifold. PO's mechanic, the local LC "specialist" left it off when he rebuilt the head. Got a new one from cruiserparts.net for about $30 and it was good as new. It's fairly common for the wire on said sensor to burn/melt, so replacing that wire will fix it.

Awesome news, guys. I will check it out tonight when I get home.

I don't think my fan is working, but maybe my engine is not getting hot enough. I will keep checking if I drive it longer than usual. Everything in Savannah is about 20 minutes away...

yeah my 40 and 60 both come on after a short trip but the 3fe's fans almost never come on.

I can drive just a couple of blocks and mine comes on. Check for the wire, first. The sensor is up under the carb, and the wire runs from the harness near the fan to up under the manifold.

Excellent info !

I'm on the same path. Wanna be sure mine's working too !

Cheers,
Cahil
