Just had the truck re-geared to 4.88s. I am currently running 315 Nitto Terra Grapplers. I am in Mass, at or just above sea level. There are no engine mods to the truck, I run it with an ARB bumper, IPOR rear bumper and loaded with tools (to give you an idea of the added weight). I run 87 octane (Mobile if it makes a difference) and the PWR button was not on.

these were my results driving home last night. all results are GPS measured:
  • total miles = 30.82
  • gallons burned = 2.14
  • MPG = 14. 4
this was cruising on the highway between 70 - 85 MPH

these were the speed measurements:
RPM..........Speedo Measurement.....GPS Speed Reading
2,250........65...............................60.5
2,400........71...............................65
2,600........75...............................70
2,800........81...............................75
3,000........?.................................80

overall, the truck feels MUCH more responsive and most importantly to me, it does not constantly have to downshift up hills on the highway. cruising at 65 is a breeze. The shift points feel the same as if the PWR button was on and I had the stock gearing. I will have it in 4low this weekend out on the sand. I can't wait to see how that feels.

I would recommend this to anyone with 35s.

The other nice thing is that when your going down a gradual slope wheeling, you don't need to use any brake. The lower torque really is a plus wheeling.

Where you buy the 4.88 gears?...

Where should you buy the 4.88 gears?...

I got a set of his "Sierra" gears, which actually are Motive gears. On that note, I also picked up a set of "Yukon" gears for the front, it was a US Gear in the box. Usually Yukon gears are Yukon's in the box, but they are not the only one to do this. The coveted Precision brand gears also does this. Infact both US gear and Motive gears have been found in Precision boxes. So I recommend buying from a reputable vendor at a fair price, checking the markings on the gears and just make sure they are NOT Genuine brand gears.

And for all of you who have completed the gear swap to 4.88, what is the typical cost of the parts and what is the typical cost for the labor?

oh boy... for me i think all the parts with the new bearings along with the gears was roughly $700...

then, while i was in there i had the shop do a complete front axle rebuild... the parts from cruiser dan for that was around $350 with a coupla axle seals extra thrown in for good measure...

the labor? i went to a fairly expensive place but i think its safe to say you are looking at $1,500 for what I just outlined.

you can see pics and slight video of it here:

Doing a test today on the way home I have slightly lowered RPMs then you

60 2150
70 2450

My speedo is clabrated and locked in.

I was on flat highway and would speed up and then let the foot off the gas to find the spot that I would maintain that speed.

www.ringpinion.biz they are in Washington state. I specifically requested Precision Gears.

Are you 100% sure you got Precision Gears, not just the box? Like I said Motive and US gears have shown up in PG boxes. IMO they are on par with PG's quality but cost slightly less.

I just droped off my diffs today for the re-gear. The gears alone cost me: front - $150 , rear - $210, oem crush sleve, seal, lock nut, gaskets - $50. No new bearings. I know it's an opportune time but with 80k and several Toyota diffs experience, feel the price isn't worth the benefit.

The setup cost me $450 for labor. All this plus the mis. stuff for a birfield gasket set, etc. -- probably less than $50. I HAD to keep this job under 1k and hit the mark but it's alot of my time/work.

i will check again on thursday... it was hard to drive and write and look at the RPMs, speedo and GPS... i will have passengers with me this time.

what tires do you run?

35 inch Toyo MT's

The air is lighter up here though :D

took the truck on a road trip this weekend and i can't say enough about this combo! while the top speed may be lower, the ease at which is cruises around 70 mph with 3 fat adults, all tools and luggage is ages apart from 35s with stock gears.

if you think your truck is not peppy and doesnt have the gonads it used to once you went to 35s... if your PWR button is always on... and you have some cash... make this move!

Sweet!! I have a similar setup. No lift yet, medium springs are on backorder from ARB but they are supposed to be on the way, j-springs up front, arb bumper 315 Terra Grapplers. I went ahead and put the tires on and the power is honestly not bad. I'm sure when I load it down with both dogs, the wife and everyone else in tow it would stink on the hwy. I also ordered my gears from JT and they are due for delivery tomorrow:bounce:! They told me Precision also, I guess I'll see. I'm probably going to due the rear first. I also have all the stuff to go through the front seals when I do my gears so I'm procrastinating as long as possible. Good to hear it was worth the money(or so I hope).

just an update... did the gears come from JT stamped as "precision"?

another update... i have been driving 5 to 9 hours a day for the past 3 days and i can't imagine this trip with 35s and stock gearing. i have been through the pccono's, the blue ridge mountain and the great smoky mountains and the 35s with a loaded truck and 4.88s have been fantastic. i seriously think its the best money i spent on the truck in a long time.

I'm surprised that the speedo is off that much. Wouldn't that mean that the odometer would be off proportionately as well, and there for the MPG would be higher than actual?

Opposite, reading an uncorrected speedometer and odometer with 4.88's and anything under a 37" tire will read higher than acutal. Meaing the odometer will read 280 and acutal will be somewhere around 260.

Scratching my head, why the speed/rpm difference between you two?

That's what I was saying. The odometer will read higher & therefore the MPG would be skewed higher as well. I just went back and read that Peepers MPG calculations were GPS based, so therefore they should be pretty accurate.
