another re-gear thread - 4.88s + 35" RPM and speed measurements

This kind of mileage is doable. I've clocked over 15 mpg with my 5.29's at 5K-7.5K elevation. But, I was only driving 60-65 mph, almost all highway. At 75 mph it goes down 2 mpg easily. This is with a GPS calibrated Yellow Box.

With good gearing and lower speeds, you can get stock rated fuel economy on 35's on an 80. I just got 293 miles on 19.3 gallons in highway driving with four adults and four kids in the truck at my elevation (two trips down the hill to Denver and back with the family and inlaws). Fill-up at the same pump.

Of course, 5.29's are too low for 35's :meh:

Rick,

The scangauge can be corrected to match the GPS speed using the onboard trim factor. Regardless of what the VSS is outputting, the scangauge can display the correct readout and compute the correct MPG (based on last fillup, amount of gas used, etc). So, I'm trying to figure out where the error is if there is one.

shows you what I know about the scan gauge. If it's been speed corrected then it should be accurate.

FWIW I regularly got 16 mpg driving 70-75 up hear in N.E., that is until I replaced my front O2 sensor. When I did that the trucks performance went up and the MPG went down. I'm not sure what it is now , but I have a long drive home tomorrow and can check it then.

Go ahead and flame me now because everyone warned me. Got my first phone call from the 4wd shop yesterday, what are all these extra bearings for? Oh you are replacing all the bearings in the front ? Where are the rear pinoin bearings? I had just replaced my carrier bearings and pinoin bearings and didn't think I would have to replace my rear pinoin bearings again(my fault). Have you had a problem with your vehicle going into park and the trans slipping? No!!, I have had no problems from my trans, my front d-shaft is out and the center diff is locked, did anyone drive it with it unlocked? Uhh, probably that is what happened. Did you drive it far, no just a few miles then we pulled to the garage door and the vehicle rolled down the hill against the curb and was in park!! My question to everyone is could have they damaged the tranny while driving with the center diff lock disengaged? I would imagine it would barely move with just the rear shaft in. Could they have damaged the vc? I can't complain too much because in the end the guys are doing a big favor on the price and he is calling me on any questions he has, but I am concerned about the trans. I did tell the store manager when I dropped it off about the center diff being engaged and the front d-shaft out. Anyone have any similar experience with the vc? Thanks for the input as always. They are supposed to call back this afternoon with an update so I will repost. (Sorry for the long rant)

No.

I don't have a similar experience but the VC can be damaged by driving it with the center diff unlocked. I would think a "few miles" would be OK.

Thanks for the input as always.

Reread your post above. You have rhetorical questions interspersed with actual questions interspersed with rehashed dialog between you and the shop. It is extremely hard to understand.

Yes, looking back that post was very hard to understand. I was on a tangent!:crybaby: I should know some more info after lunch today.

wow, then 14mpg is pretty darn good on that setup. But how far did you maintain the highway speeds (70-80)? I just have a hard time seeing an increase in mpg's when the engine is turing faster on the highway.

i should have been more clear. 14 was the best. on this road trip with a loaded truck my best leg was 13.5. that was at about 65 - 69.

today, at 80 - 82, it was 11.5. i drove that for 8 hours. i had to make it to austin from new orleans by a certain time.
