Like everybody else here the seat springs and padding in my Cruiser were starting to really be uncomfortable on some of my trips longer than 4 or 5 hours and the outside edge of the drivers seat was starting to look sad as it slowly ripped to shreds. There are plenty of threads on switching out seats with Honda, Volvo, BMW and getting a great seat with heat and awesome lumbar support, but I wanted to retain as much of the funky brown interior as possible.

I had an upholsterer that does a lot of custom rods and restorations take a look and he immediately stated that he couldn't get the original fabric but he could preserve as much as possible. The photo doesn't show too well but I also got the bottom restuffed with high density foam and a lumbar support. I had him do both sides identically to suggest an original look. I'm happy with how it turned out.

I know I'll catch some grief for this but on the first drive with these seats, the rig felt more solid through the corners and the suspension more solid over broken asphalt and rough roads. I guess the new seats soak up some of what the springs were transmitting to my a**. If you dont to replace your seats, I highly recommend restuffing them and getting the lumbar support...you won't be disappointed.

no grief from me.. it looks great, keeps the original look and is comfortable? sounds like a win win.

Looks very tidy and reasonably comfortable. You got me wondering just how much comfort should an owner of an FJ60/62 expect? Comfort is relative. Compared with our IH T-20 Crawler (1936) my FJ rides like a Cadillac. Compared to a Cadillac, the FJ rides like a hay wagon on fire!

They look very nice.

So how much was it? How long did it take?

I went through the same situation when I started to fix up my 60. The fabric I chose is exactly the same color as the old one. I doubt anyone would notice the difference. The best part was the new seat cushions/pads :D

Oh man, I gotta know how much that ran you. Redoing the seats is my next project...after the carb rebuild, but anyways...I got a friend who can make me the seat covers and would love to know what the stuffing etc cost ya.

Looks great!

Looks nice. Where did you get the lumbar support? Did the guy supply all the material to restuff them?

Thanks for the comments, but I just wrote a check. The cost was about $100 per seat and he turned them around in 24 hours...gotta love that. I'm sure it could be done cheaper but I wanted it done correctly and quickly.

I showed him a picture of the SOR foam insert to help him understand what I was after but he used his own materials including how to mold the lumbar support. He also placed a heavy piece of "carpet like" material between the springs and the foam to protect the foam and give it a little more support. I put a bit of trust in him after I had asked for the best upholsterer in town and stopped in to see what he was working on.

It may not improve your gas mileage but your back and arse will thank you :grinpimp:

Looks great.

I got the SOR replacement foam, and had a local upholsterer match the torn vinyl on the side. Couldn't be happier.

And you're right, on long trips, it makes all the difference. I was leaning so far left I felt like I was going to slide out the window.

SLO -
Could you find out the brand & color of the vinyl? I've got the same interior(s) & want my Audi Quattro seats to match the old vinyl as close as possible. Wish the cloth was still available.

The driver's seat in my '84 is still pretty good: had only 124K mi when I bought it & the PO (1-owner) only weighed about 120#.

I think it looks nice. I also think that $100 a seat is a drop in the bucket. I can feel a good day of wheeling for a couple days afterward with my stock beat up seats. What else can a person do to these things for a measly $200 that could give that much more owner satisfaction?

$100 per seat was a great deal. Nice going!

New Seat

no grief here, looks very nice and clean.if it gives you comfort on those long bumpy rides it's all worth the money in my opinion.:) did you also restuffed the rear bench seat? john:cheers:

It looks great, I think I would have done both sides of the bottom so it looks more symetrical.
