Just checking before I get a new one...are the sun visors fixable?. Mine is NOT staying up and just falls limp. Viagra is of no help ;-) Any ideas?? Or do I just need to get a new one?

That actually was my idea in the first place....but I thought the Texas sun might turn it gooey.....maybe I'll do that afterall.

Mine gave out on me and the velco solution was not working out in the California heat.

I ended up removing the visor, and twisting the mounting bracket and reinstalled it. When I reinstalled it was actually tighter than it was originally supposed to be. If you are not crazy about replacing it, just try and mess with it a little, there is a way to get it snug again.

The only this is that I am starting to realize that the problem is coming back. So the fix is not permanent.

I fixed mine by drilling a hole and running a small allen head bolt w/ washers on each side through it. I used nylock nuts. I did this about two inches down from the mount alongside the rod. It clamps down as tight as you need it and has served well for about three months now. I got the idea from searching what others had done on this site. I can send ya pics if you want, but will need to take them first.

I fixed mine a few years ago. As I recall I removed the visor and unplugged the mirror light wire. Pulled the bar mechanism out and found a plastic piece covering part of the bar worn out. I removed the plastic piece. I insulated the wire going in the rod with wet cloth material and used my mig welder to add a couple of seconds of material to one side of the rod to replace the worn out plastic piece. Cleaned up my weld with a grinder and reinstalled. About 15 minutes of work and about 30 minutes of figuring this out. Works like new. One more thought... before mig welding it I tried JB weld and that did not work for me.

I'd be interested in seeing how you've done this whenever you have time. :)

Summit, You PULLED the bar out?? I just tried that and that thing did not
BUDGE! Are you sure you pulled it out?

I used 3/4 inch round flat magnets on each side, adhered with Gorilla Glue. It may not be prettty, but it works, and you can't see the magnets when the visor is up.

Anyway Those who have fixed could please post up some pictures? thanks in advance

Reply to Airlaird, My visor shaft did pull out with some serious rotating, twisting and pulling. It was tough. There is a plastic sleave that is worn out on the shaft. As far as the mig welding, I may have pulled the wire through the shaft or I cut and spliced it back if the plug wouldn't go through, can't remember. Pics not available since they weren't done at time of fix. Not planning on taking the visor apart again. Hope that helps.

I had velcro for awhile, and then I pit some screws in it. I finally went out and got a new (used) one. Find someone parting out a cruiser, problem fixed.

Fixed it!

Thanks Summit. Well I got some strong magnets...so strong in fact I can barely pull them apart. I put one magnet inside the skyliner by going through the sunroof area.
Then simply slapped the other magnet from the inside of the truck. The magnets stick to each other through the skyline. I use the garage remote control clipped to my visor. Once I flip the visor, the metal clip on the remote hits the magnet..PERFECT!!
With our Lonestar Landcruiser Toyota Discount, new visors are $150.00...INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't you just tighten the screw on the visor?
That's what I did and it worked like a charm. I was careful to tighten it just enough for the visor to stay up so the next time it starts to come down I would be able to tighten it some more.

Anyway, I can't believe the visor costs that much in the US.

Glad you got it taken care of though Steve!

visor fix

Here are a couple pics of my fix. I melted a neat hole in the fabric with a red hot nail where I intended to drill through the metal clip that wraps around the rod inside the visor. The bolt and washers provide enough tension on the rod to keep the visor where you want it. I tried the velcro solution too and it didn't last long. Some button head allen bolts would be cleaner looking, but I had these on hand.

SunVisor fix-pics

I know, it seems dumb to post pics as simple as these ideas are, BUT as $150.00 for a new visor...this becomes a serious money issue. So, Let's all save our visors! Here is an idea I had. The 1" square here is a VERY, VERY strong magnet. There is another one inside the skyliner. ( I inserted the magnet through the sunroof opening) Both magnets are stuck to each other due to magnetic attraction...not glue ;-)
I then used my remote metal clip as the part which the square magnet attracts to.

airlaird,
that's a great idea. I did the velcro thing but the glue just melted and they fell off. I kow about Texas heat. I'm in San Antonio. Where did you get the magnets from?? I'd rather do the magnets than drill holes.
Thanks

Mine broke inside. there's a wire frame that runs around (inside) the visor and mine is broken, so Velcro, no work, bolts, no work, magnets, either. only solution... Yota Yard, $35.00 for a used one. The original at the Toyota store $189.00 (ouch!!!)
