Pics to peep: custom painted dash, stainless guage bezel, 2.5" lift /33's, TJM bumper

Wanted to brighten up the dash, black and brown reminded me of... well you know. Had it painted to match the exterior. Also installed a stainless steel guage bezel from speedhut.com.

While removing the running boards today I found some keys the p.o. stashed and apparently forgot about. It was like finding buried treasure under there. I advise all new 80 owners to do an underbody check for keys. These have been there for months.

ba ba bling :D

what does a ss bezel cost?

i'd be interested to know how the paint on the shifter surround holds up. I would like to paint mine a matching black to hide all the scratches but I figure it will scratch up again real fast.

Hey, that's not too bad. What did that pain jobby set you back?

Bezel was $15.95 plus s/h.

Installation involves using a dremel to cut away the clear plastic. Then you have to epoxy it back together. A bit of work, but the result is worth it.

I had the dash panels painted by an auto upholstery shop. They use actual auto paint and clear coat. Its hard and scratch resistant so far. Cost me $250.

You say you used a dremel to cut away the plastic gauge panel - how exactly do you cut it and with what type of dremel tool accessory did you use? I would like to remove my panel as well and install a SS bezel as well as clean the plastic or replace it as it is extremely fogged up and dirty. Thanks - Tim

Hey Tim, Check out this link at the SS bezel manufactures site for dremel info:

http://www.speedhut.com/tech_notes_detail.asp?auto_number=6

The dremel is only necessary for the bezel install. When you remove the plastic window from the guage cluser (clips) you can get your hand in through the back to clean the inside.

Thanks kindly for getting back to me so soon!! much appreciate your info!! Is it a pain to pull the instrument cluster / glass out though?? If so , maybe I'll just live with the dirty glass. - Tim

I'm addicted to the internet, so my replies are usually quick. Its not really a pain to pull the instrument cluster out, just time consuming (lots of switches to disconnect) You first have to remove the main instrument panel, to remove the top panel, to remove the guage cluster. When you've removed the four screws and disconnected the connections at the back of the guage cluster, all you have to do is release plastic clips to remove the clear plastic from the cluster. Then you can reach through the rpm and speedometer cut-outs to clean the inside.

I just noticed the 95' in your signature ...your dash may remove differently than my 94'

I called the closest TJM dealer to me (which happened to be a Land Rover shop) and had them order the bumper. I picked it up and installed it... very easy. All factory holes/mounts. No aux light holes, just winch related.

Check out the "Distributors" section: www.tjmbullbars.com

Um, my plastic part isn't glued on. It just unsnaps from the cluster once the cluster is removed.

Mine's a 93, so I wouldn't think it'd be that much different from yours?

Holy Riced Out Batman!

Actually, it looks nice.

About the keys, you don't have to be a new owner to find those, since I found some under the rear bumper of my 91 about 2 months ago. I've had the truck for more than 2 years!

hope you didn't you shave a few miles off the cruiser while you were in there.

Good to know where the key is so we can test drive it.Looks good I like it. :)

Ha... thought about it but no shaving took place.

Good job! Well done. Nice and Clean.

MF34Inc, your LC looks great.

Did you get the TJM from Expedition Exchange? I'm in LA, and thought about calling them to get that same bumper for my LX. (To avoid shipping).

Your lift doesn't have the "stink bug" look, did you use spacers on the front ?

Finally, are those 285's or 295's?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to do similar mods to my LX.

I think I'm going to do the same on the paint. I had been considering it for some time. My new stereo is silver and it looks out of place with all of the black. If I did the part you did in red all in silver it would look more appropriate. However, I think I'm going to wrap it in vinyl. There are a lot of places that sell vinyl dash wrap. It is cheaper and if I don't like it is removeable. Thanks for posting it up as that just moved that mod up on my list of things to do.

Thanks for the compliment emr88,

I did get the TJM from Expedition Exchange, those guys were very nice to deal with. Good price too. Never heard of the "stink bug" look, but I'm glad I don't have it! ...no spacers either. 295's

Hey ginericfj80,

The reason I installed the stainless guage bezel was to compliment my silver Alpine. It looked out of place with all that black like you said. I considered doing the panels in silver also but thought it would be too much of one color. Never heard of the vinyl dash wrap. Had I known I probably would have tried it first.
