I have been taking some pieces here and there for spares off a wrecked 93 FJ80 and a 96 FzJ80. I have read some on here about axles and high pinion axles. My question is are all axles with factory gears interchangeable?

Can I take this 1993 models axles and interchange them on a 1996. Are the locked years all the same and the non-locked all the same?

In this case I have found a elocked rear on 93 but the front was broken in the wreck. Will this year assembley work on a 96 with a factory locked 96 front axle?

I figured ya'll could answer me faster than I could take them apart and find out. I enjoy having my own mini junk yard for my vehicles but I don't want parts around that I can't use. If not, I may have to buy a 1993 FJ80 too!
 
The only difference in drivetrain components between 91-97 here in the states were the transmissions got swapped in 95. Oh and the 3fe got swapped for the dual overhead cammer 1FZFE in 93.. As for as the front and rear axles go, they are all the same, 9.5" rear 8" reverse cut/high pinion front.. Some 93-94's came with drum brakes in the rear rather than discs, and also got a semi float axle, instead of the full float disc brake set up, these cruisers are extremely rare here in the US of A.

Oh yeah, 95-97 birfields got longer splines where they slide into the drive flanges.. So 93-94 drive flanges will not work with the longer splined birfs from the later 80's 95-97 vice versa...
 
Slight correction,
All I believe april of 93 production forward to 97 are the same as far as ratio, Should work to interchange complete assemblies frt or rear.
The 91-92 and a few odd ball 93 trucks used a drum brake semi float rear axle. If it has disks in the rear it should work fine. The earlier trucks ratio is the same as far as axles so they would work as well but no lockers in anything with the drum brakes.
I almost tried to retrofit some e-lockered 94 axles under my 92 and there is a section of the wiring harness that is different on the locked trucks. Just FWIW.

I bought a used front housing for for my 96 and it was exactly the same except it was missing one ABS wiring harness bracket on the passengers side but other than that is was exactly the same.
 
Thanks for the responses to this question. I have one more. I found a 95 model 1fZ with 112k on the clock. Looks all good but needs valve cover gasket and maybe oil pump gasket. Hard to tell but it cranks and runs strong. Its in a wrecked vehicle and I would like to know what its worth. Mine has 202,000 on the clock and would like to get it for spares.
 
Depends on what parts you can salvage, but if the whole drivetrain is intact and has locking diffs, maybe a couple grand....
 
To answer a general question- Any year 80 axle will swap with another year. All rear 3rd members are 9.5", all front 3rds are 8".

Differences:
91-92- Rear: Semifloater (axle shafts bear the weight), drum brakes; Front: short splined birfields, short-splined drive flanges to match.

93-97- Rear: Full-floater (rear hubs bear the weight), disc brakes, ABS; Front: Longer-splined birfs, long-splined drive flanges to match, ABS. Lockers optional.

Like what was said above, some 93-94's came with semi-floating rear ends and drum brakes.
 
i stumbled across a set of axles a 91 and 92 complete set how would i be avle to tell if the rear is full floating? just by the brakes if drum or disc? also is there cclips in these rear ends?


i plan on putting these axles under a samurai i got the idea from my friend but he has fj60s in his zuk and i compared it to his rear and they looked almost identical and he claims he has no cclip

the issue is i hate cclips i have a wrangler and those axles suck but what i want to know is there a cclip eliminator to make them full floating?

these are the only two in the junkyard and i am getting both sets for free so is it worth it?

If someone were to have a non locked 80 w the FF rear, a third from a locked 80 could be substituted with no mods?

Not worried about the wiring cause a dpdt switch takes care of that.

For free, for your sammy, go for it!!! The c cliped semi floater is much stronger than the dana 35c in your wrangler.

Not quite - the flange where the 3rd bolts up has a notch cut at the 9 o'clock position (easily done with a grinder ) - and the 3rd member itself will take a few studs that are longer than the ones used for the open diff 3rd. If you order rear gasket # 42181-60070, you can use it as a template for what to cut. I don't remember the stud part #'s, IIRC there were 4 studs to be replaced, and they were 3 different lengths.

Here's a pic from my conversion, notch on left @ 9 o'clock is what was added.

Now that I see that pic, the longer studs went where there are none in this pic.
 
Gotcha, thanks. Basically the same as retrofitting an elock 3rd into an 8" housing.

'91 and '92 front axles have shorter splined birfs, drive flanges to match, smaller rotors, calipers to match, no abs, and share the same HP 8" 3rd as any other non-locked HP 8" third.

'91 and '92 (plus poverty pack '93 and '94) rear axles are semi-floating, banjo-style, C-clip axles; they have huge axle shafts (same size as SF D60 shafts, but must also bear static load), drum brakes, rear inspection cover, and share the same LP 9.5" third as any other non-locked LP 9.5" 3rd.

Yes you're right. You have longer splines on the RH side rear in a factory locking axle vs. the open diff one.

Clarifying - My 94 with FF rear and no lockers - I can swap a 93 through 97 no locker rear and be good?

I am guessing it is easier to swap a diff than try to rebuild mine - I torched the pinion shaft after the CDL and 7-pin mod.

Next question is - any suggestions where to find one? I am running out of local junk yards to search here in Ohio.
