I am sure it was the seal mounted to the backing plate. I didn't say just how bad the bearings were. The hub was riding on the bearing housings. The bearing rollers were totally gone. The top of the tire could move inward and outward at least 4".
So, lost the bearings in one front hub. Not as much damage as I was expecting, but the hub may be no good. What do you all think, replace it? Is there a speedi sleeve to fix this? Shim the seal plate out a little further?
My booster works well. I usually have 18inHg at idle so it could be better if my engine put out more vacuum...
I figured if the larger caliper idea doesn't pan out I would swap to a smaller master.
I know they are used on the rear. I run them :).
The GM metric calipers have a larger piston area then the Toyota ones. You can also purchase 2 3/4" calipers.
I have a nice firm pedal. Too firm actually. I have to push really, really hard to stop. There is no air in the fronts.
I thought I would start here since I am running pick up knuckles on my FJ40 axle. I have a 1" master, dual diaphragm booster, the larger 4Runner calipers and late FJ40 vented rotors, but my front brakes don't stop worth a darn.
Does anyone know of a conversion to larger piston calipers? Maybe...
I skipped the minitruck flange idea.
I ended up purchasing 2 yoke flanges today from Tom Wood. They will mate the 1310 ujoints to the '71 56mm x 60mm diff flanges. This way I don't need to replace my diff flanges. Since I have 10 spline pinions I am limited to this pattern or the newer 60 x...
I do have a SBC, 700R4, 1980ish 4speed tcase and '71 axles. The tranny/tcase came with custom long spline shafts (CV rear and straight front). They were orignally connected to Dana 60 axles. The flanges wouldn't do me any good so the PO kept them. So rather than have all new shafts made, or mine...
Thanks for your reply Dingman. I am not positive from your pictures, but mine looks more like the IFS one in your pics.
Edit: Never mind. I just noticed the ears on the flanges on the IFS shaft. Mine does not have those which suggests I have the SFA shaft instead. That is what I thought I...
The joints in a '71 are about the same as 1310's so I'm not trading down. I am also looking at some 4speed shafts this weekend and may decide to go that route for the rear at least. Problem is clearance in front since I have a 700R4 with a stupid wide pan to clear. I have about 1/4" clearance...
I do mean the drive shaft flange.
I know the pickups have a round pinion flange, but I dn't know about the drive shaft flange. I suspect it is rectangular, but I never saw one before.
So from your comment I assume the drive shaft companion flange doesn't have a lot of room for drilling up...
I have a '71 FJ40 that I swapped in a newer 4speed transfer case. Some drive shafts came with the tcase when I bought it. The tcase and shafts had been mated to chevy axles so the drive shaft flanges at the pinion end won't work on my 40. The shafts are custom made long splines with spicer 1310...
Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought I just wanted to make sure before I spend more money on used stuff.
I wish I could afford Longs... I really do. They are on my list, just not right now.
