First, my thanks to everyone on ih8mud. You are a great community and always very helpful. I am starting to reach the age where some jobs are just too big for me or I no longer have the tools and space to do the work. My long-time "go-to" mechanic was older than me and sold his shop a few...
Looking for expert help. I have never had this issue before. My ‘69 FJ40 spends winter in a heated garage except for the few sunny days without winter crud on the streets. Started it up yesterday after a two month rest and the speedometer was registering 50 mph when I was going 25 and the...
After 54 years my firewall gasket surrounding my steering column with three on the tree has finally begun to disintegrate. I can buy an aftermarket gasket and cut a space for the gear shift but before doing this, I wanted to see if there is a material (like a paste or putty) that I can use to...
I had my frame cleaned and painted last summer purely as protection from mag chloride and to make the FJ look new again. The paint shop did an excellent job but I can't tell if my dust boots on the front end got damaged in the process. I could use some experts to tell me (photos attached)...
I just posted a "wanted" ad in the classified section, but maybe this will catch someone's attention who can help. I am looking for one used old style "acorn" hub cap in good condition (or a good reproduction). I lost the one for my spare tire a few years ago and would like to replace it. If...
I have an original owner 8/68 "1969" FJ40 with old style "Acorn" hub caps. I lost the one on the spare a few years ago on an extra bumpy trip. I would like to replace it with good condition used one or a reproduction. Thanks!
Years ago I was shipped the wrong tail light lens and gasket for my 8/68 FJ40. I have two new OEM lenses (part number 81551-60130) and gaskets in original SOR packaging. They are red in color and measure 4.5" diameter. Happy to sell for $10 plus actual cost of flat rate USPS priority shipping.
I use my 1969 FJ40 for fly fishing up into the mountains (rough 4x4 "roads"). I don't mind uncoupling my fly rods for travel but I prefer to not have to break them down all the way and put into their protective cases. Has anyone found or made a good solution (like interior roof clips, etc.)...
I got my instrument cluster and speedometer cable successfully installed. My FJ40 is an original in the family and I forgot to add some miles to the odometer before reinstalling the instrument cluster. I really don't want to pull everything apart again. Can I advance the odometer by removing...
I recently installed a new one-piece speedometer cable in my totally original 08/1968. Good news - the speedometer and odometer worked immediately after installing. The speed needle was not steady (it oscillated within about a 3-5 mph range at all speeds) and the odometer was accurate to...
My 1969 FJ40 rearview mirror vibrates when driving. Is there a way to make it fit tighter in the bracket? I tried to slightly bend the tabs outward before reinstalling the mirror into the holding bracket (which is solidly secured to the windshield frame) but that did not help. Any...
Sent my 8/68 FJ40 to the paint shop for the first time in its history. Also replaced all door weatherstripping with OEM. Driver's door seems to be out of alignment -- top half is ok but bottom of door toward the rear (away from the hinges) seems to stick out more than I remember. Passenger...
I broke down and got my 1969 FJ40 (8/68 production) repainted inside and out and replaced all glass seals and rubber pads. I missed a summer of fishing in the mountains but the result is worth it. Since the FJ has been in the family from the beginning, everything is original and I am trying to...
My 1969 FJ40 has been in the family since my dad drove it off the Toyota showroom floor. I thought the FJ historians on this forum might like a photo of the "Content" list that came in the tool roll. It is not in prestine condition because the grease gun leaked on it while in the roll, but you...
I see multiple posts about the spare tire bumper and finding an OEM replacement. Thanks to several people on ih8mud I cross referenced part numbers and found that Toyota used the spare tire bumper on early FJ40s to become the adjustable hood pad on over 19 Toyota models over 15+ years. The OEM...
My 1969 FJ40 has been in the family since it came off the dealer's lot. It is original factory specs (production 8/1968) and I am trying to keep it that way, but my Dad could be quire the improviser, especially if something squeaked or rattled. My hood rests on the four "radiator shims" which...
I am doing a complete new paint job (original colors) and it makes sense to replace old cracked rubber gaskets and weatherstripping. I have relied on Specter (SOR) for OEM and Aftermarket parts with good success over the years. Only aftermarket gaskets are available for 1969 (pre 3/69...
