Thanks for the support Steve. Whatever bad thoughts I do have are quickly outweighed by how grateful I am to be wrenching on and driving a truck that I’ve been pursuing for the last decade. After all, this is exactly what I wanted!
Welcome. It looks like a real nice 40 to start with. Don't put into 4 wheel drives until you confirm the frt end gear ratio. The 1st thing you should do is getting it running, stopping and driving consistently. Then baseline it. You're not...
It's been a minute since I posted but I've been slowly chugging along. The head is rebuilt and back from the machine shop. I still need to clean the engine block up and get it ready for the new head gasket. I'm trying to get everything ready...
You've done great work on this truck and have posted excellent photos. And you didn't whine about an SA rig - you just dove into the mess and fixed it. Nice job! And you have to have a 'highway breakdown story' along the way - we all do.
So here are the photos of the stance on the 40. The first picture is before the others are after
The difference measures a 2” lift in the rear and 1 1/2” up front
The rest are from today
I can see how it locks in around the wheel with the tabs. Could just be that it's new plastic and new wire. On the other (20 year old) caps the plastic may be worked in a bit. Even the old ones have a definite "snap" when putting them on and...
Truck looks great!
Am I the only one who can understand how OME can screw up bushings (and continue to)? I would love to know the chemistry of their product. My FJ40 has Energy Suspension bushings installed in 1991, and they have not crapped out...
I've spent a few days with this sexy beast and during one especially long and lustful stare his name came to me. Randy, in honor of the the singer:
If ever anything exemplified Sexual Chocolate, it's this bad boy.
Careful with the rubber mallet. Do this the hard way: remove the wheel from the truck and test fit and study so that you can see what's really going on. A dab of grease on the tabs is a very good idea to try, before firing up the Dremel.
Just purchased an 06 Lx470. I’ve been looking for quite a while. This one popped up on FB marketplace with 1 low res photo, but when I contacted the seller it was actually a sales rep from a Lexus dealership in Arizona.
It was a 1 owner w/ 145k...
I want to thank everyone for the input and the responses from the group. They were a bit mixed; however the votes to stay Toyota were by far the winner. I spoke with Redline cruisers this afternoon and I’m going to take my truck down there and...
45 mph is about the speed where wind resistance hits vehicles enough to affect mileage. I drove my '01 F350 Powerstroke 7.3 diesel skiing one year and barely hit 55 on the entire trip due to traffic and roads. I got ~21 MPG, which is insanely...
Elevation shouldn't help, but maybe it does. My city/ MPG is more like 14.6 (consistently), so clearly start-stop really hammers the mileage on these fat pigs.
^2FE Route.
Did it in my previous FJ40, for the little i drove it before selling, i was very impressed at how it improved everything all around.
I had bought a running & driving junk 80 with 300k for $1000, took all my parts I needed, sold the...
@Live to Ski - Looks like great mileage!
Speaking of fuel mileage, I just drove from Colo. Springs to Ouray (then Silverton) and back. First tank - 18.44 MPG, 2nd tank 18.8 MPG.
Bone stock '99 LX470 with 343K miles and 265-75-16 tires. Cheap...
Hello everybody!
I just registered but I have been reading through the threads almost daily since I bought my LC in May this year.
I should have read it before the purchase :))
It’s a completely stock UZJ from 99’ with a decent service...
The results are in... The middle two cylinders are sad (remember how I said Cyl 3 looks the worst). The rest are above the 150 mark. They were probably higher when the rebuild was new.

I am gonna get beat up something fierce for this. If i was gonna go non toyota power in my 40, it would be some flavor of Chevy small block. It is a well documented swap that would fix your concerns without reinventing the wheel. This makes it...
If your 2F has decent compression (at 6500 feet, you'd like to see 115-120 psi), put AFI EFI on it. Mine pulls hard in all gears, starts great, etc. Short of towing trailers (which is sketchy behind a 90" wheelbase vehicle), I have no power...
Gates is/was a belt company (for a LONG time), and I'll bet their water pumps are just re-branded stuff from China/Korea. I would always run a Gates belt (on anything), but would not run anything but an Aisin water pump on a Toyota.
