The connector in the fuse box may be worn out or corroded. If it isn't making a good connection it'll get hot from resistance. Id take a male ctimp terminal of the appropriate size and see how snuggly it fits in the fuse box side.

Yeas, play is normal. The small plastic bit is the 5th gear oiler. It goes in a pocket on the transmission side of the forward t-case half. It makes a gutter and the little spout lands in the rear of the 5th gear bearing.
