For those who have done this I have 5 wires coming off my overhead console.
It has a sub tank and altimeter guage on it.
The wires are

red/yellow = guage sending unit?
gray = ?
black = ground to body?
green = ?
blue = ?

Can you tell me where to connect them to?
Folks keep refering to 6 wires but I only see 5.

bostonmangler has a nice pic but hard for a nonelectrical person to follow. Any help is appriciated.

Thanks

Below is the correct sequence and it works.
Only 5 wires needed to be connected.

Blue/Red = 12v+ gauge
Red/yellow = sending unit
Green/Blue = 12v+ light
Black = reostat for the lights
Gray = chassis ground

Thanks Kevin and cruiser804:cheers:

Bump to the top as I am about to do this a year later. I see I can order the OEM harness in ElMariachi's thread or wire up the 5 wires myself. Since I built the rest of my own harnesses, I see no point in switching now.

Did you source a connector or cut the connector and solder wires?

Where did you pull The +12V off of and I am assuming you used the light wiring from the existing map light?

From what I have researched, Toyota does not sell the female conector to mate with the overhead console. I just used quick splices into the various wires.

Romer,

Yes I used the map light and I just cut and soldered.

The other big thing you have to do is modify or buy new visors. After looking into how expensive they are I went to a local auto/boat upholstery shop and they cut the ends off and sewed them to look OEM for $20!

Where did you guys get these overhead consoles.

Were these from the e-bay dude?

I got mine off e-bay australia!

Try to get the subtank altimeter combo instead of the subtank compass combo. The later via cDan is a real PIA to install.

If you went through the pain and expense of a subtank this is a must have:beer:

What console:rolleyes:

Thanks guys for the wiring tips

Just another note.

Check the light bulbs in the overhead console (there are 4) 2 of mine were burnt out. Much easier to replace them when the unit is out:doh:

I was also going to cut/modify the visors for my install. Glas to see someone else already tried it. Do you have any closeup pics of how they sewed the ends?

I just had to replace the little light bulbs in my overhead console - instead of going back to Toyota for the stock ones I bought four green LEDs and a resistor for each (around 390 Ohm from memory) and put them in the plastic bits the bulbs were sitting in. Works well and I should never have to replace them again.

I think I took some photos of the job, if I find them I will post.

So if I already have the alti compass combo in my truck, I can just swap out the inard to the alti sub tank ? and fit the sub tank of course:)

Sould be easy!

He used glue, heat and sewed it up.
I will get e close up in a day or 2:banana:

Blue/Red = 12v+ gauge
Red/yellow = sending unit
Green/Blue = 12v+ light
Black = reostat for the lights
Gray = chassis ground

So wiring this up per the above

The Fuel gauge sender I routed up through the roof.

The 12V+ gauge and 12V+ light I tied together and tapped into a switchable 12V in the moon roof/map light connector (Green yellow wire in Harness connector)

Chassis ground tapped into the map light connector (white/black wire in Harness connector)

The Black Rheostat wire would make sense to tie to ground, but that did not work

Is there an issue with tieing the two 12V wires together? I verified in circuit 12V present on both wires

I verified the Ground in circuit is tied to Chassis

I verified that when you push the switch to turn the gauge light on, one side of the bulb socket is tied to the Rheostat wire.

No lights, could be all the bulbs are burned out but not likely

The fuel gauge didn't show any fuel, but I need to validate the wiring back to the tank. I ran that wire through the roof down the drivers pillar so I have full acccess to troubleshoot that once I get everything else taken care of.

Comments?

I did not believe that all 4 bulbs would be out either. Put one in from your dash that you know works and see.

This picture from Jim's write-up says one of the wires should be -12V where above they are both listed as +12V, that would be a problem
