CARAVAN....we have a group leaving from Dallas on Saturday morning. Planning to swing by the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, and then head to Capulin Volcano on the route to Raton NM. Sleepover there then the next morning head up I-25 to Walsenburg where we will then head west and off road (fire trails, easy) through and over Medano pass which dumps into the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Following that, we will then head west out of the park and catch 285 all the way up to Fairplay and then 9 to Breck.

Any interested parties let me know. If from Austin/SA area, we can try and connect in Raton or anywhere along the route. Feel free to PM me, the more the merrier.
BUMP!

I booked a house on High Street from the 23-30th. I may run your route starting on Thursday.

Might be fun to run Boreas Pass into Breck to finish the day. Not far from FairPlay and only an hour run. I think it’s basically a dirt/gravel road with great scenery.

We're heading out toward Breck tomorrow and had time to do a wax and polish ahead of the trip. See y'all in Breck!

Looks awesome!

My car has like a quarter inch of dust on it (not exaggerating :( my poor rear bumper) and tons of character building pin stripes on the side.

Living up where I do, due to the cold, my house doesn't have an external water spigot. It's a PITA to drive 30 miles to go to the closest car wash.

Ohh well, I'll be the dirty girl at LCDC I guess.

Check out the “Event Info” section of the site. There’s a link in there. I’ll also share in the next email as well as ham/frs frequencies.

Cole,

Have you guys posted the frequency list yet? I didn't see it on sched, but maybe I'm overlooking it? I'm itching to get my radios programmed.

I've told myself for the past coupla weeks I'd clean it before I left, that it was gonna look good. After eating s*** skating on Wednesday night, I dont know how inspired I am to wash it. I have locked in a route, coming outa NJ, Columbus, St. Louis, Wichita, Denver, Breck. Gonna grab my brother from the airport Sunday AM and be on the way. Should be around for some dinner and BSing Sunday night, or some light running around Monday before festivities.

All, due to a work-related situation, I am no longer able to attend LCDC. I've let our organizers know and anyone on the waitlist should be getting notified. Whether someone from the waitlist, or anyone else already on the roster - I have a VRBO condo rented that I cannot cancel due to VRBO policies, and would love to transfer over to anyone who'd be able to use it? 2 bdr / 2 bath in the Village, and parking for built rigs like most of us would have (not with RTTs, etc, however). If interested, PLEASE message me! As an financial incentive, I am open to a small subsidy on my part as I'd rather someone from LCDC be able to use it vs having to ask my employer to pay for the rental costs in full.

Have I missed or can't find the link for GPS or Gaia, whatever to see trail maps? TIA

I would recommend OnX Offroad. Good search function and the information is pretty reliable. Also the ability to download maps at different resolutions is really simple to use. I think they were a sponsor last year. Not sure about this year. Pretty sure most of the trails are on there, I know Red Cone and a few others are for sure.

The GAIA link is on the "Event Information" tab on Sched. It's a bit buried, but it's there.

Still waiting on the frequencies.

Left Virginia on Friday and went to the Kentucky Toyota Land Cruiser chapter event on the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway over the weekend. They have been working really hard to get us access to more trails out East. You may have seen an article on it in a recent Toyota Trails issue. Great people at the event and the trails have plenty of challenging sections. Off-road | Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway - https://www.ridethedbbb.org/

Good people to hang out with. Tent camping was a bit brutal with the heat and humidity. Collected some new KY pinstripes and plenty of mud. Hit some severe thunderstorms while leaving which provided somewhat of a car wash. Didn’t get any wheeling pics unfortunately but did capture a few of my favorite things along the way.

See y’all on Monday.

✋ low-lander asking for advice on how to mitigate and treat altitude sickness.

I spend lots of time above 5K feet here in Washington without issue, but 10K+ is another ballgame. I get into Breck Sunday morning and my first trail Tuesday will be Mosquito pass with @linuxgod . Other than acclimation and staying hydrated, what else? Do the compressed air canisters work? Everything I read say that they are ~25% oxygen at best.

Dehydration is the main issue people face. Unless you're a heavy smoker or have lung issues your body will adapt after a day or two. Drink lots of water and try to limit caffeine/booze/other diuretics, particularly for the first 24-48 hours. Not sure where you're staying but Breck is at something like 9k elevation so you'll likely be adjusted to the elevation by Tuesday (or if you're not, you'd know it before you hit the trails).

FWIW we live basically at sea level near Chicago, and we've camped at 8-10k elevation without issue. Sometimes when going from sea level to 8-10k' some of us may get a light headache but some tylenol or ibuprofen will help with that. Typically we'll arrive one afternoon/evening and make camp, and then go our hiking the following day.

If you're used to 5k elevation changes and don't notice them then you probably won't notice 10k.

If you feel light-headed or tired be prepared to take a break. Last year after Imogene I felt fine but my father and his friend who were in the upper 60s were tired and feeling a bit off, so it can happen.

My wife, who's asthma is enough, said the canisters helped, but not anything worth writing home about. Water is big. I feel like driving in helps acclimate as opposed to those I know who flew in, and it's like a sudden leap up from sea level. But im not a dr or scientist.
Leaving Wed morning from NJ, ill keep my eyes peeled for anyone headed from the Beast Coast.

Good to know, I also shave asthma

Last minute routine maintenance complete:
Radiator ✅
Timing chain tensioners 😬
Cam sprockets 🤷‍♂️

just drink lots of water and you will be fine
^^^^ this. Also some people are just more susceptible to elevation sickness than others. My son for example even as a boy would have to stay at 5 to 7000 feet before we went up to the passes to go skiing. We live at 925 feet but a day at 5 to 7000 is all he would need. We of course learned this the hard way by trying to get up to the ski resorts on the first day for skiing and then had to drop back down for him to recover before we try it again.
