1980 HJ 47 Troopy Questions

I have been assisting a person on their 1980 HJ 45 Troopy that he recently acquired from Australia.

I have some questions regarding the roof.

What are the brackets inside?

Looks like a popup roof.
Do you have a picture of the top side?

Dan,

That's an interesting air-ventilator.

Years ago Land Rover offered an optional dual roof on their tropical vehicles for ventilation and heat control.

The stock factory roof was given top hatches and a second additional metal roof suspended perhaps an inch above it.

Some of the locals referred to it as "African air-conditioning."

Or so I recall.

Thanks!

That is exactly what it is. The bolts along the sides allow the innner panel to be moved up or down. I guess This controls the amount of airflow coming out the vents. It looks like the entire inner roof can be removed.

That's what I was thinking also. Saw an older rover with it once.

Looks great. I need to do the bedliner in mine...

I agree, David:D

It looks like this one has the same little notch cut into the wheel well for a fridge like your black troopy did. Was there a fridge in there once, Dan?

I'm guessing this rig was from up north somewhere like Darwin or Far North Queensland. Up there, keeping cool is crucial and having a double roof would really help with that. Do yo have any shots of it on the rig?

I wonder if it was once a pop top like David's and has been re-converted to a fixed-top...

click on my garage to see mine up.
Trakka used to have a pic on their website, not sure if it's still there.

It's a sweet setup, it sleeps two up top and 2 kids across the front half of jump seats with the table spanning the gap. Mine had 2-burner stove, fridge, sink, and water tank under each fender. I removed one of the cabinets so the stove is no longer attached to the rig and I use an ARB fridge/freezer instead of the original 12/240V upright fridge. With the top up, standing room is about 5'9".
