Ok, I've been thinking about adding a basic sub to my 80

I don't need anything that will blow out my eardrums (I've long outgrown my SPL days), just a basic budget based add-on that will give a little kick when watching movies :)

The kids actually prefer watching in the truck rather than the plasmas at home lol

I've seen LDD's sub enclosure and as much as I like the stealthyness, I don't like that fact that I have to chop the rear pocket :o

That's where I plan on mounting my amp anyways

Anyhoo, it's gunna be a budget build, so here's what I have listed so far...

Kicker ZX300.1 amp with remote sub controller: $65

Elemental Design SQ10 slimline 2ohm sub: $70

Enclosure Built to specs using MDF or HDF: $???

Now the idea for the sub enclosure is to build a slimline downfiring box ported towards the rear hatch kinda like this, but much thinner (whatever is appropriate for the single sub)

This way I won't have to worry about the sub getting damaged from junk I throw back there

I want it just as wide, but built for a single sub on one side, leaving the other side empty for storage space (tools, recovery equipment, etc.) with a hinged top door

Like this:

Debating whether to carpet it to match the interior carpet or use tan vinyl to match the leather seats

I want it to look like part of the vehicle (almost OEM), but still be able to remove it easily if I need to

I'm still open to suggestions at this point, so if you have any please post up :)

I picked up a new infinity basslink sub off ebay a couple years ago for my silverado. after i sold that truck i transplanted the basslink into my cruiser and i really like it. my tastes are like yours and the install time was about one hour and it cost me about 200 bucks.

Here your sub would last less than 5 minutes, Unfortunately for us concealed sub is the only way to go, better to loose a pocket than a subwoofer :grinpimp:

It has been more than 10 years I did it , and there is not a second I regret all the hard work it taked, and as most of the 80´s owners can certify, there is no price to saved space !!!!!

I rather keep my amp dry than the sub

Besides, I could always remove it when I deep sea diving ;)

This is what I did. There isn't really much room in that pocket that you are losing.

Don´t get me wrong  I was talking about breaking inside my Cruiser and take away the sub as a souvenir !!!!!

Some friends also got tired of mounting and removing the sub !!!

Any way, if you look were sno bored installed his amp, if water got to it´s level, chances it will damage also the head unit

In that case, maybe you need an alarm like mine ;)

YouTube - HORNBLASTING GONE WIRELESS!!

Awesome, but I would move the horns to the rear of the Cruiser so in case I need to pass anybody when going uphill, just pushing the remote will do it and it would be waaay cheaper than a supercharger :grinpimp:

Or when crossing a river, one set on each side pointing the water, a blast and it will cross it like a Hovercraft !!!!

To lose all that space in the rear trunk area IMO is stupid if you don't want ear blasting capacity. Lose a portion of the pocket in the rear and conceal it (I think you only lose about 1/3 of it anyway). Less weight as well.

Would it be possible to mount the amp on the driver side of the cargo area behind the panel there and putting the sub in behind the ps panel? This would require more cable running but would save the pocket and keep all of the cargo space.

Well, you might see it as lost space, but I see it as lockable storage for loose junk that usually goes rolling around back there

It's possible to mount the amp on the driver's side, but I have way too much stuff in there as is :o

I would do something a little smaller. With that box it seems like you're going to loose a lot of utility. Do you ski? If so, I think you're going to have a problem.

Don't ski, unless you you count water ski, but if that's the case the skis go on the trailer ;)

OK, installed the amp yesterday and decided to hook up a couple of boxes to see what configuration will work best for the new box design

First I tried out some garbage ghettobox we had laying the shop...

landcruisersubwoofen8.JPG

Sounded decent at best, but gave me a good idea of what to expect when I tried different positions...

Then I yanked the K series stealthbox out of my T/A

Tried a bunch of different positions, but the best sound came from downfiring which is exactly what I was hoping for :)

Hit 3 times as hard as the Roadmasters :D

Much deeper sound and far more crisp

Gunna try different spacing for the vent this week and see what works best before I put in the order for the SQ10 enslosure....
