Just like the fan clutch from Heart of Texas OffRoad being a screaming, money saving deal, the struts from Reid Tool are as well. My struts have been installed for six months now and operating just like the day they were installed. Two thumbs up!

Greg,
Update on the file you just uploaded to the Lessons Learned. The Reid Tools struts are still going strong in my truck two years later from when I first posted the information. Still two thumbs up! As for the Heart of Texas fan clutch mentioned in the same post, it was a screaming deal for the price - too bad it was for the wrong application!!! Turns out the Aisin clutch I bought from them was for a diesel and didn't work properly on a 3FE. Still, the struts from Reid are a great deal. I've never thought they were too light or heavy in their action, but just right.

I'd like to suggest that we add to the lift gate FAQ that you need to cut the ball out of the socket on the old shock for this to work.
And it does work!
Additonally, the socket comes with what looks like a securing device/clip. Is anyone using this?

Greg,
Yes is the answer to your question. The shock unit comes bare ended and you will need two ends for each unit. The 90 lb. units that I installed on the white truck over two years ago are still working as well as they did the day they were installed. I put some on the gray truck and they work great too. LSC

Subject: Lift Gate Installation
Decided to change out my lift gate gas cylinders when I kept bumping my head into the upper gate while putting together a bike rack last week.
WOW!!! The upper gate opens a good 14 inches higher than before - now it opens all the way above the truck roof as opposed to just below it.
Ordered the following from Reid Tool:
Part No. Unit Price Order Qty Total
GAS-124 GAS SPRING 11" LONG 14.08 2 28.16
GAS-202 METAL END FITTING 2.58 4 10.32
You will need the following:
12 mm open-end wrench
Blue Loctite Thread-lock
Grinder or hack-saw
Optional: vice to hold old cylinders.
Instructions:
Unbolt the old cylinders from the lift gate,
Use the grinder to carefully to separate the male side of the fitting by destroying the female side.
Bolt the male fittings back on truck using Loctite thread-lock
Install female fittings on new gas cylinders
Attach cylinders to male fittings
Add clips to secure male/female fittings
BE AMAZED!!!
Total Time: Less than 30 minutes.
