I recently bought a 86 and it does have some rust mostly along the roof where it meats the rain gutters. I saw on SOR that I can purchace replacement gutters. Should I buy them before I take it to the body shop for body work/ paint or wait and see if the ones that are rusted could be fixed. I was also wondering anyone who has had theirs painted what is a reasonable rate for painting just the outside? It is currently tan and Im really diging the dark brown or a smurf blue. Any thoughts/ comments?

Thanks

pics of the rusty areas will help. if it's got holes thru, the damage will probably be much worse than you see. if it's surface, it can be cleaned up and saved.

where in the state do you live?

no idea on a price for painting, depending on how much prep you do, could be $299 "Maico" special to $3000 top notch job

do you like metallic brown color? I've got an entire body for sale

I will post pics soon, and yes the rust spots on the roof are all the way through. I saw I can buy a new roof off of SOR but its spendy (hope I dont have to do that). Yeah I like the metallic brown color how much for the body? Pics?

roof rust

Here are the pics of the roof rust. I have a parts cruiser that I could chop the roof off of and swap them or should I just fix the rust thats on here. How hard would a swap be?

That is ugly. Bummer is that it is a double wall of steel there and the inner is probably the same.

I'm thinking you'll need to do what we talked about earlier. cut the other top off at all the pillars and use the entire roof assembly.

You are definetly getting water in thru those holes, it may not be coming all the way thru because, as stated above, there is the inner metal lip. So it's just collecting inside doing the same thing there.

Yeah, sounds like your probably right. You said allot of measuering is required....are the tops between the 62 and 60 different?

No the bodies are the same, for the most part. the measuring comes into play to make sure all the doors and windshield and hatch all still fit and seal correctly
