heres a thought....instead of throw down 3000 bills for a new engine...just get another cruiser...and keep the other for parts....just a thought tho...a new engine does sound nice....
OR
you could buy a rusty 60 with a good motor and use it for parts.
The rusty 62 I just bought for $1000 has a strong motor but the body is not very good.
I have a brand new still in the original Toyota cardboard box. FJ62 shortblock with 0 miles. I thought I would post this and try to sell it here before I auction it on Ebay and they ream me in fees. If anyone is interested (serious inquiries only) email me @ speedntriple@lycos.com and I will send you pictures and price. thanks!
You can do a search online for used auto parts, I cant remeber where but I found a place that had used landcruiser motors for around $3000 (long Block).
you could put in a '99+ LSx based motor from a Chevy truck. 4.8/5.3 (iron block/alum heads) with a NV4500 go for much less than the LS1 (all aluminum) V8's. The above website has them from rolled/crashed trucks.
Alternatively a used 2F motor would do the trick or buying a rusty beast and pulling what you need. You could probably get the engine for free after parting out the rest.
V8 conversions require adapter plates and I would budget 30-50% more than you initially plan on spending. I've done multiple engine conversions and it is the little things that nickel and dime you to death.

If you're not a mechanic, you're going to HATE doing an engine swap on a 60 (no matter new, used, or rebuilt) - the smog crap will drive you crazy. You should start out with something easy, like an air-cooled Bug.

Let me quote a mechanic friend on swapping in a new Toy V8: "Why don't you pick something REALLY HARD?" Think about it - Rod Millen's FJ55 cost about $500K to build, & it has that engine.

Air cooled bug, huh? I've had a bug, actually, I learned how to drive (had me first wreck too) in one! I'm not officially a mechanic but I've done a couple of Toy truck 'same engine & tranny type' swaps, plenty of clutches, 3rd members, brakes, etc...I cannot rebuild an engine or tranny, but I can sure wrench (or try) my way with just about everything else. If I get stuck, I can always count on this forum... This forum rocks, when it comes to help! I look forward to the satisfaction of doing the TBI swap myself. This type of stuff, and some beers, is therapy for the mind.
