GULP.

Dropped off the rig at my local Toyota dealer to get the gas tank recall taken care of.

After reading several threads about this recall, and confirming the one on my rig has never been done..I scheduled an appt for this morning and dropped it off.

The look on the Service Manager's face when he opens the service centers garage door, comes out to greet me and asks "So what are we doing on your land cruiser today?"

Me: "Gas Tank recall...."

He looks at me and does a quick glance at the truck and looks at me confused and asks "A recall ?!...For What?"

LOL. I explained to him what the recall was for, provided him the Recall notice number (M01) and told him I had called T.O.A. to confirm it has not been done.

I am praying that when I pick it up I dont get an "addional parts/labor" bill. I've read some pretty interesting stories about some people getting chaged extra for stuff. I told the manager THREE times that I want to be called ASAP to authorize and chargers that are NOT part of the recall. :hhmm:


Either way...It's my first service department/dealer exprience. I'm a "do it yourself" guy and have always worked on my own cars so maybe I just have that "fear" from reading too much internet hype lol.

If you havent looked into your gas tank recalls...DO IT!

My Cruiser is new to me and have been thinking of a larger tank.
But hey, a new "Free" tank is a new tank!

From what I gathered, was only until '87.

Didnt come up for my 89.
 
why would you be charged extra for anything related to a recall if your truck is stock?

People have had bitter experiences in being charged for things such as "extra labor to remove bolts that broke due to rust" etc..things such as that.

what is the process to check on various "recalls"?
 
Some on Mud have experienced clogged filters after that recall. If not too late, ask the dealer nicely to blow the 20+ years of accumulated dust etc out before installing.

You can almost guarantee that you'll be charged a "shop fee" or "disposal fee."

The shop fees are generally for use of thier rags, oil and other necessary things that need to use to do what they do. Apparently we're supposed to reimburse them for them now:rolleyes:

The disposal fee is for any oil, fuel or tires, batteries and other "hazardous waste" products that they may have to dispose of.

Fortunately, at least down here, it only amounts to a pittance...probably less than $10-15.00:cheers:

if its part of a recall those fees are put into the net amount when inputting the claim into toyota. Even if the break your straps or whatever they can claim it under the recall. They probably already did but they are probably just trying to charge you and see if you say anything or not or you have a bad service advisor.
You should see the things you can claim under warranty/recalls
 
shops cant 'bill' you without your consent, so if they ask you, tell them you are waiving the fee and they are to go about their recall order. stand your ground.

Yeah...if I lived in the northeast or the truck was from the rust belt...you would expect to have some issues with fastners / bolts under the body. I think any decent shop would charge expenses related to that to the recall.

Some shops are out there to try and get every $$, however they can. There's not a lot to installing a fuel tank... mabe you would have to replace a hose or two and some clamps and then maybe a bolt or two.
 
yep both rear outboard seat belt retractors are recalled along with fuel tank....and they are not suppose to charge you ANYTHING for the labor or parts. All the parts are included in the recall....

Mine had to order the parts as nobody has them in stock...took about two weeks to get them in the shop and about 4-5 hours of work.

Both Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach and Gene Reed Toyota in Charleston have done the recalls at absolutely NO CHARGE...as is the proper practice. All parts and labor are included in the recall charges and sent to momma toyota for billing....end of story.
 
ok I have heard all about this recall what is it about and what happends
 
I think the issue was the fuel tank rusts internally more than it should.
 
ohh ok so do they replace it with a plastic one then?? because I havent had it done

UPDATE: As the same thing happened in my case. Truck is back in my possession. Service manager called me this afternoon telling me the parts were ordered but will take 1 to 1.5 weeks to get as they are scattered all over the U.S. :popcorn:
 
i looked the recall up on alldata today, the recall is for the fuel tank building to much pressure duiring hot temps and splitting the tank at the seems, there is also a
recall for the rear seat belts not retracting
